Elan Bicycle

Here's an interesting find, courtesy of the recent Westminster swap

I'm unsure of the provenance of this bike. It is an Elan. The details-- Vitus 181 tubing, Super Vitus dropouts, I believe Prugnat long point lugs, RGF bottom bracket shell -- indicate French manufacture. There's a similar bike hidden in the archives of bikeforums that no one knew anything about. The threading on this bike is English, and I would guess it is of eighties vintage. There are no shop stickers on the bike or any sign there ever was one, and the paint appears to be original. The build is pretty nice, better in finish quality that the average French production bike.

There's a shop in Australia that used the Elan marquee, but the decaling is different. That shop produced three brands-- Europa, Abeni, and Elan, and the provenance of those bikes ranged from custom to Australian production to Japanese contract production, and the quality ranged all over the place. Due to the ah, Frenchness of this bike, I'm uncertain this bike is Australian, but there's a chance of it. There's a thread on these bikes on an Australian forum, and I'll post the if inquiries here yield nothing.

I like the obscure, but I also like to dig up some info. A fellow at a local shop thought there was a builder in the Northeast who used the Elan name, but web searches turn up nothing. The gentleman I bought it from-- a fellow whose C & V knowledge I would rate as extremely high-- said he knew nothing and had been able to find the same.

However, there is always the collective hive mind of this board, so I'll drop this on your grey matter and see what the disturbance stirs up.

Thanks-- couldn't get the photo link to work at all; click on it and it wouldn't respond. Tried putting it in with HTML, that didn't seen to work either. Sure it's an MBK error, but being said MBK couldn't figure it out. Like this bike.
