Without any doubt you've misunderstood me; perhaps you're one of those who makes a point of being offended easily, often for no reason.
READ THE POST, the key word is suppose. You clearly didn't get that - have a dunces cap...that's a cone hat in white - any insinuation is in your mind, I'll leave it there.
I'll also repeat the Rules aren't mine, and if those that have replied to my post(s) were of an enquiring mind they might find them fascinating as I did - I might have posted the link if I thought you folk were curious
And for the record I did reply to the OPs original enquiry.

In response to the current difference-of-opinion, I can forgive hobbs' zeal and ardor in the defense of tradition. What better thing to go out-on-a-limb for, here at C&V? This is, after-all, the C&V forum, so I think we can all step back and cut some slack for him, even though his robust enthusiasm has been mis-interpreted by some. Let's admit that the devout traditionalists and nuovo modernists, and everyone in-between, are correct, here at the C&V forum.

Guys (both or all of you) does this issue warrant the tone here. It's about water bottle cages, and so-called "rules" that nobody takes seriously, or if they do, nobody is empowered to enforce them anyway. Even if there were rules, it wouldn't make sense to apply them to an era before they existed.
So chill out and leave the anger and name calling for P&R threads.

I'm amazed that anybody takes the "rules" seriously. This applies to both those arguing about them, and to the person who first brought them up (I suppose) facetiously, in case he didn't.
It's especially pointless to argue rules or "period correct" with reference to thing like bottle cages in that era, since at the time the "rule" was wherever the **** you want it. Just about the only period correct argument that could be made is that only one is allowed, since it was very rare for anyone to have more than one on the bike.
FWIW - I suspect that all these "rules" were started as a joke, and stayed that way until some newbs started believing they were straight and they took on a life of their own. It's sort of like when wire services pick up a story from the Onion and them mainstream media report it as news.

On the mornings of Central Park races you'd see the waiting riders on two benches about 50 yards apart, neatly sorted according to those lines. Some of us called members of the first group the "Bike of the month club".

Some advice: When "no offence" is meant, you shouldn't use the term "clueless cretin".
That's not a "rule," just some common sense.

FWIW - I'm such a clueless cretin that, even now, I STILL can't believe that anyone takes the Rules seriously. On the bright side, that also means that nothing a true believer says can offend me.

Wow this thread is sure a mess.
Everyone, please understand that ego and the need to feel 'right' can get in the way of being reasonable, fair and allowing others their right to do as they please as long as it's not immoral, illegal and not hurting anyone else.
That being said, put the dang water bottle where ever it makes you happy.
Hobbs, please leave this thread.

Yes, there is a semi-humorous list of "Rules" for road cycling floating around the internet. Mildly amusing to read once. But not worth much more than that.

let's be real---- this is Bike Forums.
If someone were to post about the beautiful bright blue sky on a winder day, the thread would probably run to 400 debating just how blue it was, why it was blue, why it wasn't really blue, bur we just perceive it that way, how the sky is bluer than that in Nevada, not to mention all the unhappy folks griping about their perpetual overcast.
Bicycling is a huge tent, and any kind of consensus (on anything) here is never going to happen. It used to be that we were unified on t least one point, namely that a bicycle was 2 wheels and pedals, now even that isn't true anymore.
That said, I am often surprised by how seriously some folks take this stuff, but even there there's a huge spectrum, so I guess I shouldn't be.
