Mid 80s Schwinn (Cimarron / Greenville-built) serial numbers

I have a few 85-86 Schwinn Cimarrons that were built in the Greenville plant.

On the bottom bracket shell, there are two separate serial numbers stamped:

1. The first one is the regular Greenville serial number, that starts with S, then a month code, then the last digit of the year, and additional numbers e.g. SD500000

2. Under that, there's a smaller three digit code stamped separately (a little lighter), e.g. 450

Does anyone have any info on the second three digit codes for these? Is it just the Nth number of frame of that model built during that year or month? Did these also appear on other Greenville built models?

The 450 number might be the part number for the bottom bracket. Roger

Hmm, I hadn't recently looked at all of them but I just double-checked the serial numbers on the three I have access to this afternoon (an 85 23" frame, an 85 21" frame, and an 86 23" frame) and this particular second number is "446" on all three of them.

@rhenning might be on to something with the bottom bracket part number. Looks kind of lightly stamped in there, so maybe it was there before the serial number was stamped and the frame was painted?

Here's an example picture below:

I concur with @rhenning that the 446 is most likely a mfr. part number. A more important number is the 4-digit no. stamped in the headbadge that indicates the day the bike was built.
