I carefully lined up new decals to my liking and used masking tape to hold them in place while I removed the backing:

Excellent job! I just saw this thread today, otherwise I would have recommended using heat and pulling the decal back onto itself, not away from the paint. This reduces the chance of pulling up the clear. But great job!!

Now, for $600, I would have insisted on having the painter fix that screw up. That's a ton of dough for something that could have EASILY been avoided.
