I love it. I love Rudges. I don't have any recommendations for what to do with the bike, but I look forward to pictures of your progress. Are you, or is someone you know going to ride it?

This has been fun. Thanks for sharing the pics with us. A wealth of good information here. An early long lever shifter with the one piece fulcrum clip still in place. Stirrup brake levers, original transfers still intact. Possibly even original grips. I'm guessing the rear rack originally held panniers. Don't ever through away those old tires! They're worth keeping just for the "inflate hard"

I thought the side guards were skirt "protectors" so a woman's dress wouldn't get tangled in the rear wheel. You've probably seen stuff that looks sort of like decorative cord back there on old bikes....

Thanks for all the input. And thanks Clubman for getting the ad back. It's going to be a long, slow project as the bike is in Scotland and I only get to spend limited time there. I will certainly keep posting photos of the progress as I clean it up. As for who will be riding it; it'll mostly be my daughter and I. I ordered new tyres and tubes for it already.I thought at first the side plates were skirt protectors too but little feet protectors make a lot more sense, plus the ad makes it clear.

Hey VV, Post 19 in this thread.
I thought about skirts too but the OP's are too small and too high up to be useful. I've had a couple of women's Dutch roadsters with those guards. I only used them on special nights out on the town

@clubman - Not sure how I managed to miss that!
Thanks.
So I have a question. When I see the white part painted on the fender I immediately think "Raleigh Co. owned bike", but this bike, especially the shifter looks older than when I think Raleigh bought up many of their competitors. So what year is this bike and was it made when Raleigh owned it? Or did Raleigh ever own Rudge? I understand or at least think that new laws required the white part on the fender due to many bike crashes with cars.

I know the hub has "48 1" on it. I take that for January 1948. Checking on the frame number against the info on Sheldon Brown's site puts it at 1947. I'll post a photo of the frame number later.

Yes, if it's a Sturmey Archer hub. It's fantastic and I look forward to more photos and your progress!

According to Sheldon, Rudge was a 1943 acquisition and it, along with Humber, were the premium marques along with Raleigh.

Sweet riding lady! Dig the patina and even the dirtiness has a perverse appeal. Dunlop tires note to 'Inflate Hard'. I'd replace the tubes and squirt it up with lube. LOL

Here's where the bag originated from. One side of the bag is in poor condition and the straps are weak. I might have to find someone who can do leather repairs. To answer above, yes it is a sturmey archer AW hub.

Thanks for the bag info. So this is a local bag maker? I wonder if they are still in business. It don't think it should be too much trouble to find a leather shop who could put the straps right. Is the bag material waxed Cotten? It reminds me of some of the OE that Raleigh had for their bikes.

Lots of amazing details, and I particularly like the heavy duty bell.
