83 Colnago Superissimo to showcase 6 arm crank

This was a long term project. About 3-4 years ago I came across an early Super on Ebay. The components were of a later vintage and it was too small for me but it did have the rare 6 arm Ambrosio crankset. So I bought it. Turned out the frame was damaged. I sold the frame to Drillium Dude who used it in his latest Colnago project.

I then went on a search for the right frame for this crankset. The crank was available from late 70s to early 80s so the frame had to be correct period. I thought the Superissimo was a model likely to have been ordered with this crank. I bought this as a frame with damaged decals. So new decals, a little cleanup and touchup, an 83 Super Record group with the 6 arm crank, some Colnago panto parts (seat post, stem and brake levers) and a Wheelsmith wheelset with Record hubs and Saturne tubular rims and I have a nice package to showcase the crank. A somewhat rare Assos saddle and some leather bar tape finish it off.

I was losing the light for these pictures but they turned out alright. Probably will post a few more with better light. I know no toe clips. I am out and vintage toe clip prices are ridiculous so I will have to buy some new ones.

That's really nice.
I have a blue 83 Supermissimo that I thought was stunning, but yours is...beyond.

Another jaw-dropper! Never seen that crank, thanks for sharing.

And great photos! I need to figure out how to take good bike pics like that.

What an absolutely beautiful Colnago, that burgundy colourway and the details being highlighted so well are beyond anything I could hope to do. I have read about that 6-arm spider, but this makes an even 1 for seeing one installed on a bike. Thanks for sharing it here.

Your Colnago is something special. This is 'the ultimate (or pretty close to it) as far as I'm concerned.

There is something about a Saronni red Colnago, and that is one of nicest ones I have seen.

Beautiful machine! Would look better with proper Benotto tape & that saddle leveled out. Nitpicking aside, nice build. Enjoy the ride.

Fab build! Worth the time it took for sure.

So what's the story on those cranks? Were they bling for rich folks to show off with, or were they made for pro racers to have some sort of stiffness advantage? Can't say I've seen one in a racing pic from back in the day.

I promise to always perform and document this test on all bikes before taking pictures Photo in previous posts have been corrected as yes saddle was not level. Leveling saddle with old two bolt NR seat post is a real pain.

As far as I know they were just bling. I have seen them on the Colnago Arabesque models before but they are very rare. Replacement chainrings are pretty much unobtanium.

I can see that the six arms are a definite plus when painting the Italian flag tri-colours in each arm's milled grove. (5 arms mean choices/decisions have to be made.)

What a looker! The Assos saddle is a nice touch, and something you don't see too often.

Love this beauty. That deep red with white panels and tape really sets it apart. Nice job piecing it all together. The photography work is top shelf and your 'Flickr Albums' Galleries are to die for... Great work all around!

Very nice. I bought a '73 Super with this crank set, wrong era for the totally period correct, but also full Super Record elsewhere, so I changed the pedals to Superleggeri and ride it a lot. From silly coffee runs to "training" rides.
Best part? 53/40 rings.
Really want a 36… they exist but no where to be found.

That's gorgeous, thanks for posting the pics. Surprised to see that crank would take down to a 36t inner ring. Too bad they're unobtanium. Enjoy!
