Why So Many New Old Stock (NOS) Bertins?

Over the past few years there have been a zillion NOS Bertin frames on Ebay. Almost all of them are red, and most have never been built. Does anyone know why? Was a warehouse full of frames discovered in the French countryside or something?

Cheers
JD

jdnzero-

I have seen restored Bertin framesets on EBay from Adrian at the Flying Wheel in New Zealand but not NOS. There have been a series of NOS Legnanos from a European warehouse, though.

I don't think there have been zillions - it's the same half dozen or so that no one bids on, relisted over and over for years on end. They're modern tig-welded frames - not vintage.

Thanks for the nudge, Super LJ. I think the ones being referred to are like these :

These red, black/yellow and yellow framesets are tigged steel Bertins and Bertin produced Nickel branded framesets from the last few years of Bertin production. I have a final year Bertin catalogue and the illustrations match closely with the EBay ads. Once Cycles Bertin left the business, a lot of NOS got sold off and I suspect these framesets were among that closeout process.

A few years back there was a good deal of Bertin/Milremo merchandise which came up on ebay from former importer/retailer R.C. Hallett of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Evidently items which had been in storage since the closure of his business. Readers with long memories may recall his display adverts in Bicycling! magazine back in the 1970's.

Agreed and those are the only "NOS" Bertins that I have seen on eBay in recent time. They all seem to be from one or two sellers (in EU) and the prices seem very good for this quality/Era (if you like this sort of late '90s frame) but the seller doesn't know what the tubing is (except light/thin-walled steel alloy). I suspect it's something pretty good but personally would want to know better before I bid on one.

unworthy1-

My 2000 catalogue shows the Bertin C 3000 series frameset as 3 main tubes Columbus Thron Mega with stays and forks as unidentified Cro-Mo. The C 6000 are Columbus Foco with a Look carbon fork. The bright yellow Nickel branded framesets look like re-labeled C 1000 Bertins which were Hi-Tensile in both the frame and forks.

I ordered a Bertin C-35, my first quality bike, from one of those 1970's Bicycling! ads.

Thanks for this (much more complete than the seller has) Info!

That makes sense... that they closed shop and sold all their remaining stock at auction or to a vulture who's selling them off slowly. It's been a few years now, but I had to filter through a lot of those on Ebay when I bought my first frame ('88 Bridgestone RB3), and I'm seeing identical red Bertins there to this day.
Thanks y'all.
