Restoration project Legnano

Hi All,

I'm restoring a Legnano commuter bike, an Italian brand of bike from the 70s or 80s.

Anyone wants to follow it & see pics here's the facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/legnanovint...clerestoration

Cheers!
Steve

Steve -

There is a guy here in Canada who is a big Legnano enthusiast and runs a site called Condorino. It has very comprehensive Legnano information and may be helpful. Click here. Your bike looks like it has real potential. Good luck with the restoration.

Wow -- that website is a treasure trove for Legnano enthusiasts.

Cool project, @Malta, condorino bars and all. Looks like it just needs a really thorough cleanup and some new consumables. Maybe rims if you want to upgrade. What do you have in mind for the rusty rims and bars?

Thanks. TBH I don't want to spend on it so for now will probably just use a chrome spray on black gloss which gives a fair result, then if it grows on me I'll chrome properly when funds allow. The bumpers (fenders?) on my Triumph Spitfire cost an arm and a leg to re-chrome and I'm still not happy with the result.

The cranks came up really well in a quick apple cider vinegar bath, the brake levers not so much. All the rest I'll do in an oxalic acid bath. I had the vinegar lying around and couldn't wait for the oxalic this weekend.

What rims would go as a correct period upgrade?

Cheers

Malta-

Alloy Weinmann Concaves or Super Champion Gentleman would do. I'm sure there must be Italian equivalents and undoubtedly someone will make further suggestions. The big thing is to switch from chromed steel to alloy for improved braking. If new/rebuilt wheels are out of reach at the moment then try switching out the brake blocks to Kool Stop. That will help.

I would look for some nisi or Fiamme clincher rims.

Not sure I understand this but I would clean up vs spraying chrome paint? Just use 0000 steel wool and you may be surprised and the patina is attractive. Look forward to your page updates.

Ok so most parts cleaned up much better than expected in a mild oxalic acid bath.

Except the mudguards which I guess are aluminium (stupid moment) as they came out black

so those have to be chrome sprayed. I'll probably also do the brake levers and gear lever (?) as they are very pitted I guess from all the years of sweat and grime.

Started to put it back together yesterday

Skip the chrome spray all together. Get some aluminum polish, and some lint free rags/cloth, and a fresh can of elbow grease. The aluminum bits will clean up, try some 0000 brass wool for the pitted areas. FWIW.

Best of luck on the project, be sure to keep us updated and figure out the pic posting thing, if nothing use the "Manage Attachments" option, in the "Go Advanced" posting.
