I'd like to hear more about clear coating soot!? Maybe I should just try it and find out.
Here is a nice thread I put together on painting road bikes. The idea was for a complete instructional on how to do a pro job start to finish for the beginner at a reasonable cost. Nothing else out there this comprehensive that I could find.

I don't have a lot of examples of great or unique vintage paintwork, because most of my bikes are pretty standard. But here's something you all might like - the vintage(-ish) Land Shark I found. As far as I've heard, all of John Slawta's Land Sharks have different paint schemes, and I quite like this one for its subtlety. But that also makes it difficult to really capture in a still image, so here's a few to try to convey the sense of it (I can post a link to the Flickr album if you want to see these larger):
And here's one with the exposure ramped up a bit to pull in more of the color:

And my other submission for interesting vintage paint is my 1970s James Pickering. The overall paint job is a very simple single color executed well. But the interesting part is that on the down tube instead of decals, Pickering painted his name - essentially autographing the bike. You can confirm this by comparing the two sides. I haven't seen anything quite like that before.
