Study on Vintage Bikes - Help Appreciated

Hi

I am undertaking some research on vintage bicycles and am trying to develop some baseline information. I have developed a short survey (<2 mins to complete). If you are interested in vintage bikes I would invite you to complete the survey below.

The survey is in a simple Google Form and is anonymous.

Many thanks

I completed survey. I'm interested in what kind of research this is for? Seems interesting based on ques. of survey. Let me know thanks.

I agree, the questions definitely strongly hint at some kind of new parts that imitate vintage parts. There are a few of these around, particularly cranks, but it's a market I'd love to see expanded.

This academic or commercial?

Fahrenheit531 04-05-17 11:11 PM

Done and done. :)
@repechage -- Questions suggest commercial, but are pretty nonspecific. Unsure what real insights could be gleaned....

Not academic, it's market research and disingenuous of the OP not to be clear. Look at the OPs location MD/DC ! The moderators shouldn't allow this...how can you trust anyone who doesn't give their location ?

John.

Just a point of information.

MD/DC could very well be an honest location, implying the northern or eastern suburbs of DC, such as Bethesda, MD or any of the Maryland towns outside of the DC line, and inside the beltway.

As for the survey, folks can fill it out, or not, or fill it out with fictional answers if they feel it's out of line and want to return the favor.

IMO, no harm, no foul here.

I see no cause for alarm, unless others follow this guy's lead -- perhaps citing this very study as precedent -- and begin conducting other market research on the web.
Then from there it's a slippery slope to everything being arbitrarily, even covertly, collected and aggregated and sold and...!?!
Oh, right. :innocent:

I take your point but this person posted the same request for help on RetroBike on March 1st 2017, using the name Ardvark99...you decide: Study on Vintage Bikes - Help Appreciated | Retrobike

It wasn't well received, we prefer integrity.

Considering the amount of info we already relinquish to big data, this is nothing to get hot and bothered about.

I guess C&V has no integrity and Retrobike has dibs on being honourable. Hobbs guy, you should try harder to avoid dissing people, intentionally or not.

My point was limited to the issue you raised about the person's location info. I took no position either way on the survey.

Hi All

Thanks for your consideration and time. I have both a personal and professional interest in this space and am at an early stage of formulating some business ideas. No this is not purely academic interest, although I have plenty of that. This is also 'not yet' fully commercial so really nothing more to say at this time, but as soon as I can I will.

I have cross-posted survey on other sites where I think like minded people congregate including in the EU. I am not sure why this would cause concern. The purpose here will ultimately be to support the community.

Thanks to all those who have participated.

Well that's pretty ambiguous. Personally I don't willingly volunteer my time or opinions without knowing what they'll be used for, and very rarely for a commercial interest. So this is a big pass for me.

I'm also unsure why this person would be fishing around forum sites for responses. Seems odd to me.

Likely because seeking out vintage bicycle aficianados via traditional random sampling would be a colossal waste of time and energy.

I'm really confused though. Clearly, this individual is looking to do something aimed at the vintage cycling crowd. As no questions involved where I store my bikes and how I secure them I doubt there's nefarious intent. So why would you not want to include your preferences and experiences? Adding your take on things only increases the likelihood that the final result is of benefit to you.

Anyway, for those who are hesitant: there are no demographic questions beyond whether you own vintage bikes and how many. The only personally identifiable anything would be if google surveys log your IP address, which wouldn't surprise me. Survey is short and general.

And no, I have no personal stake in this guy's research. I just don't know if we should punch a guy in his virtual teeth for seeking information that may help a vintage cycling endeavor.

Kilroy1988 04-06-17 08:34 AM

I'm with @J.Oxley and crew. This survey was completely simple and impersonal, and there should be no reason to fret. If someone is looking to understand a viable market for vintage bicycle parts or reproductions, more power to them and more possibilities for the community. I happily filled out the survey - it only took a minute.

It's a survey. Take it or not. I did it and the world didnt implode and negative people are abound. Business as usual.

The OP responded, but I guess even that won't be good enough until his business plan or ideas are posted.

Dfrost 04-06-17 12:12 PM

I did not notice any questions in the survey that seemed inappropriate or invasive.

Andiroo99 04-06-17 12:50 PM

I can assure any concerned parties that as suggested by the last few responses their really is nothing nefarious here. This was aimed at simply being a quick and simple way to move beyond a 'gut sense' and somewhat more robust than a focus group with a handful of people.

Once again all help greatly appreciated, and as/when I can provide more info I will.
