Bonehead move of the week

Rebuilding and cleaning a rear hub, took it apart and grabbed the degreaser to spray down the inside of the hub. After letting it sit a few minutes, something wasn't right. Took me about 2 seconds to realize I used spray adhesive, what a freaking mess.

Could have been worse. You might have been trying to wash your windows.

styggno1 04-17-17 09:03 AM

Could have been worse. It could have been cyanoacrylate based. "A friend of mine"... Used ZAP cyanoacrylate at all the wrong places once. "He" will never do that mistake again.

rhm 04-17-17 09:03 AM

Nice! :thumb: What do you use to clean that stuff off?

Lots of solvent? Goo gone? If he caught it when it was wet it wouldn't be... terrible... to clean off.

sloar 04-17-17 09:14 AM

W-40 took it off, luckily it wasn't totally dry. Just really, really gummy.

davester 04-17-17 09:31 AM

So now you know what to hand to your competitor when he comes over right before the race and asks to borrow some spray chain lube. :innocent:

jimmuller 04-17-17 10:10 AM

That's what you get for buying your lubes and cleaning fluids from a discount Internet seller.

Drillium Dude 04-17-17 11:22 AM

Ugh, what a mess that must have been! Glad you were able to clean it up :)

remind me my Dad once told us he tried to brush his teeth with the original Brylcreem (a hair styling product made of an emulsion of water & mineral oil stabilized with beeswax)

Been there, done that in my youth!

Almost used Preparation H for a dentifrice once at my in-laws.

ksryder 04-17-17 01:42 PM

Sprinkled my oatmeal with cumin instead of cinnamon the other day. (I eat oatmeal before I ride so this counts as bike related right)

Ha! One time, back in the 80's, I was at work and noticed that my armpits were unusually sticky, and I'd been wondering what that strange smell was I'd been smelling all day. Finally dawned on me I'd sprayed hair-spray under my arm pits, and spray deodorant in my hair. I'd woken up late and rushed off to work with a hangover. It was the 80's. I drank a lot back then....

Last winter, I decided to finally fix a couple flat tubulars I had (just got myself a bottle of liquid latex a couple of months earlier). Started out on an old brownwall Sprinter; found the leak, patched it up, sewed it up real nice, then grabbed the bottle of liquid latex to put the base tape back on. Put a good amount of latex under the tape, mostly because I thought the latex ran a bit thin. put the tire aside to dry, with a clamp over the base tape.

An hour later, I removed the clamp, and......the tape did not adhere at all! Picked up the bottle............and noticed it was a similar-sized bottle of rust-removal prep.

lolz.

My bonehead moves almost always involve buying the wrong size of something. And that's not even limited to cycling. :)

Not long ago I sprayed what I thought was Spray & Wash on several articles of clothing. Only to find I had accidentally grabbed a spray bottle my wife had filled with bleach. I suppose the upside was that the stains were indeed removed. Alas, along with the fabric that had hosted them.

Dammit recruit. pay closer attention when field stripping and cleaning your piece!

I'll show my age here, still using Brylcream for my mop.

Ouch!

I once installed a crankset backwards. Both sides and didn't realize it until I took the bike off the stand.

Did this once with paprika. Prompted me to build the drawer organizer that my wife was wanting. Actually the taste was not too bad

Also mistook my glue stick for chapstick once. Organized my office desk drawers soon thereafter.

Yesterday, I didn't discover that my 3-cross wheel build was actually a 4-cross wheel build until I'd spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out why the first leading spoke seemed way too long.

..."And that's why my first single-speed conversion has a left-side drivetrain."
