Help confirm Trek ID please.
 

Serial number is confusing me, so I went to the brochures. I think I narrowed it down to the 1982 715, I thought it was a 614 at first but mine has the Shimano dropouts and the 614 has Suntour. When I first got the bike, it appeared to have remnants of 531 decals on the fork blades so I put new ones on. I'm just curious to what I have. Thanks


serial number is hard to read but I got 009411 with an A above it and an F below.

If you got the serial number itself right, it's a 22.5" 1981 model 710. As far as the letters, I was told that sometimes the actual brazer stamped in his initial or some other maker's mark, right near the serial number. Hopefully, Mr. Thompson himself can clarify that point for you. Congrats, looks like a good one. 😎
EDIT: I should have said it was a 1981 stamping date, lol, it might easily have been a 1982 model year. Probably was '82, with the color wrap. It's tricky, for sure, even if you think you got it figured out. 😉

That is a fancy lookin' bike. I mentioned in that other thread, I can just imagine how smooth that thing rides.

If that's the same 531 butted tube set as my 730- but also has the long chainstays... smooth from the wheelbase and compliant from the 531.

I have been obsessively looking at the 600 and 700 range from the early 80's lately. Other than that, I claim no expertise. I don't know how closely Trek stuck to the catalog specs, but the 82 700's had a color wrap on the head tubes according to the catalog. Also, the 82 700's list the dark blue as having pewter panels, not light blue. For that matter, the 82 600's don't list a blue at all but there is gun metal* listed and a blue bike shown. It also has a pewter panel. Maybe an 81?

*I think of gun metal as gray but the catalog also lists a pewter so I think the gunmetal is blue. I did see gunmetal blue listed as a color in a later catalog.

That looks an awful lot like the 1981 710 described here: Big Oak Bikes: 1981 Trek 710

Certainly looks like a 7nn series frame. The fork crown looks like a Haden Europa, which would be consistent with a 7nn frame and Waterloo-built Reynolds 531 fork.

Thanks, I got a great deal on it. Seller thought it was a 600 series frame, so I just assumed it was until I noticed the Shimano dropouts.

I'd love to own a 700 series sports touring Trek. Those are cool bikes. I have a 600 series (an '84 610) and it is one of the nicest riding bikes I own. My rational mind knows that the difference between the better 600 series (mine has a chrome moly fork and stays) and a 700 series is immaterial. But I'd still like a 700 series sports touring Trek.
