With that chainring and some of the outlines on the decals it looks kinda like a Superior or New World? Hard to see.

Nice old track bikes like that always bring a smile to my face. I just love their simplicity yet purposeful reason for being.

Here in Australia, there were so many bike builders building frames for the track or track/daily transport, that it's really difficult to zero in on a specific builder - I'm wondering if it is similar around your neck of the woods?

With all those reflectors, it looks like it's done it's fair share of commuting. I used to love commuting on an old track bike back in my youth.

Thanks for the pic.

Not mine, but it was posted at a local estate sale. Too small for me, but looks like a great ride

Good call on the chain ring! But if it's a Schwinn chainring (AS&CO) it appears to be on backwards.

Looks like original paint and wood rims, all in good shape. Quite a find.

I don't recall having seen those lugs on a Schwinn; but certainly on other track bikes of the era, Drysdales, Brennan, etc.

Best guess, a Wastyn, maybe. The cut outs on the headtube lugs say Wastyn or Brennan but I think I see open seat stays and that was a Wastyn detail. BSA chain set pretty common on bikes of this era. Nice bars and adjustable track stem, looks very era original-correct. Fantastic bike, I love these things, is it still for sale?

A real track bike---nice sprints rims and great track fork--many track bikes were build using BSA so that's no help in I.D. but nice to see. Also I've seen those head lugs that go around the head tube but I have no idea on who made them???

The headtube lugs cut like that are a hallmark for Pop Brennan frames, Wastyn used the design as well but they tend to be a little thicker in the band area that wraps around the headtube. I'm sure other builders used them as well, would be nice to see a close up of lug details. Another give away is Brennan bikes have no serial number, a Wastyn would typically have one.

Here is a nice Wastyn example, similar headtube cutouts and open seat stays...

I'm sure it's sold (the sale started today). Chicago area, so Waystn could be.

Guess I need to change my photo settings. Yes, it's a Goossens Special, the address "missing from decal" is 2424 Fullerton, across the street from Wastyn's at 2429.

thinktubes 05-06-17 06:34 AM

@John D Did you get it?

If only it had a few more reflectors...just kidding.

Awesome bike!

Those pedal reflectors look like something one could have purchased at an automobile supply store ca. 1948.

Oh man that is super cool! The "Goossens Special" decal is a lot like the Alvin Drysdale and Dick Powers decals of the 30's, but I've never heard of Goossens before. :thumb:

thinktubes 05-06-17 02:08 PM

Super cool John D - glad someone here picked it up. Too small for me.

St33lWh33ls 05-06-17 03:38 PM

I have read that Louie Goossens was a Wastyn apprentice that eventually opened his own shop. There was another Goossens Special for sale on EBay a while back that had some trophies, a jersey and some spare wheels for sale. A BF member now owns it, he has some photos of it on the CABE. I had never heard of Goossens prior to the EBay listing, I did a pretty thorough internet search and only came up with four examples including this one, I'm guessing they are pretty rare.

Now it looks the business.:thumb:

Any markings on the stem, it looks similar to a Drysdale piece I saw on another vintage bicycle?

Spaghetti Legs 05-09-17 07:08 AM

That is cool. Looks fast; you can't say that about a lot of those older ones.

Senrab62 05-09-17 07:51 AM

BEAUTIFUL pick up! Moar pics please!

50voltphantom 05-09-17 07:57 AM

This made me sit up in my chair. I can't wait to see this bike all cleaned up.
