C&V Ride, Sat. May 13: Bay Area Welcomes Gugie

Any Bay Area folks up for a nice East Bay ride to welcome @gugie back to his old stomping grounds? As mentioned in another thread, forum member gugie will be visiting the bay area from Portland. What better way to host our esteemed forum member than to get together for a nice ride followed by some beer and grub?

After a preliminary discussion with gugie, the tentative plan is to meet at the North Berkeley Bart Station at 10:00am on Saturday, May 13. From there, the route would take us past the Claremont Hotel, up Tunnel Rd then along Skyline to Redwood Rd to the Pinehurst Climb, back toward Berkeley via Skyline and Grizzly Peak, a right turn at South Park Drive for a fun and fast descent, then a beautiful little stretch through Tilden Park on Wildcat Canyon Road, before descending back into Berkeley via Spruce. Total distance is ~37 miles. It's mostly up and down, but nothing is excessively steep except that last half mile of Pinehurst and we can take it at a gentleman's pace. By mile 30, it's all downhill.

As a post-ride reward, we'll finish with some drinks and nourishment at the bike-friendly Westbrae Biergarten (www.westbraebiergarten.com/) for anyone who is interested. (It's a short distance from the North Berkeley Bart Station starting point).

A good dose of redwood trees, bay views, nice bikes, good conversation, and cold brew..Who's in?

Sounds perfect! The calendar looks clear. That's an especially good route right now because both Redwood and the Moraga/Canyon road are closed, limiting car access to that part of the route.

I have the bike all fixed up which I used for doing this very ride between 1987 and 1992. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, I will be in Portland.

Sounds great and I know the territory from early life (first soccer lessons were in Tilden Park when I was just a laddie) but have to be a "tentative" due to scheduling. Will make it if I can! Enjoy the ride in any case and welcome back to gugie!

So, if you're going to be in Portland, holler out, the PDX gang will take you out on a ride!

Glad a critical mass seems to be taking shape. I'm looking forward to the ride next weekend.

Btw, @gugie, if you need any tools or workshop access while you are in town, drop me a line and I'll be glad to hook you up. No jigs or welding equipment but I should have all the other basic needs covered.

Damn, I was hoping to make a few frame mods while down there...

Thanks for the offer! I just finished building up the bike last night, who knows what needs adjusting out of the box?

Bike build tease. This is shipping out today. I picked an extended stay hotel about 6 miles from work so I can continue my commute miles. It'll also be my ride on the ride.

That's all we get?? Geeez! I do like that decaleur design. Adjustable height, that'll probably work with different bags. Who'da thought! No Rube Goldberg over-design either.

When is the big reveal?

Just a little leg for now. Any guesses?

As for the decaleur, I've gone public on the 650b group and my Flickr site, shipped about 20 of 'em.

I've seen that frame in person, but won't spill the beans here. Wish I were headed to the Bay Area next weekend, but instead I'll be heading to CT for a rando ride.

A CT rando ride, most likely you'll be the only one not riding a J.P. Weigle model? Maybe they'll throw in a Herse and a Singer or two...

BTW, I'll soon find out if it rides as you mentioned others have said...

It took a minute or two to see them, but there are several hints in those pics that give it away. I know, but I'm not going to spill either, yet.

Good to know you've gone official on that decaleur. I may have to think of an appropriate bike for one.
