Peugeot PX8? I appreciate your help.
 
I have a vintage Peugeot frame with the fancy Nervex luggs, Simplex drop-outs (raised letters), and a brazed on down-tube shifter mount....but only one on the right. The left does not appear to have been removed either. There is a six digit serial number stamped in the bb shell. There is also an old looking brass barrel adjuster threaded into a braze on for the rear derailleur (sorry Sheldon.) The frame and fork both have braze ons for fenders/racks. Original color was white with the typical checkers. I got it pretty cheap to build up a fixie. I also found a NOS campy french bb so no need to send warnings about hard to find parts.

I've seen the usual websites with crappy scans of old catalogs and brochures, so please only email if you know your shiz. Thanks for any info...

Until they switched to stem shifters in 1974, UO-8s had only a right-side shifter boss, with a clamp-on strap providing the left boss. This enabled Peugeot to build 5-speed and 10-speed bikes with very similar frames. I believe the higher-end Peugeots, the PA-10, PR-10, and PX-10, had conventional dual bosses and never came in single chainring versions.

Most older Peugeots have one or two rack/mudguard eyelets around each axle.

Is there any chance of posting a picture, even a low-res one from a cell phone?

Six digits= sixties. White= no earlier than 1967. Any frame tubing stickers? "Tube special allegre Peugeot" or "Inoxyadable"? Location of chrome? As John E says, the one sided shifter braze ons are indicative of the UO8. I have PXs from 1967, 1972, and 1973; none of them have shifter braze ons, aside from a stop on the bottom of the down tube for the clamp on shifters. Won't claim to know my shiz, because I haven't a clue what shiz iz, but John E, T-Mar, Miami Jim know a lot between them. Probably can get it pretty close with a photo. I can generally get it within a few years by the decals.

French parts ain't that hard to find. It's a myth I spread over on the fixie board so I can buy up all the old French frames for myself.

My 1980 PKN-10E came with dual shifter bosses; I don't know when they started to come through with those instead of the dual-boss clamps of the early 1970s models.

As for knowing shiz, that reminds me of a little joke:


Two strangers are sitting in adjacent seats in an airplane.
One guy says to the other, "Let's talk. I hear that a flight
will go faster if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

Verily, my PF and PK, both from the same approximate vintage as your PK, also have dual bosses. I think they came in between 78-80; the mid seventies PXs I've seen had clamp ons. A sixties PX would have clamp-on shifters, of this I am sure.

Of course since I don't know shiz, I'm not qualified to discuss nuclear power or bicycles... or any combination thereof.;)

Perhaps the change to shift lever bosses coincided with the switch from French to Swiss BB threading.
