Just be sure there is no buyers remorse when you see that "classic Colnago, Masi or ? for around the same price.
It sounds like you have deep enough pockets to make multiple high dollar purchases, so buy it for now for "your"son.
Best , Ben

I'm actually have been casually looking for modern steel bikes (I have one modern custom steel bike and one old steel bike, a Bianchi I bought in 1987 with every penny i had). So I have only purchased an old bike when new.

Sorry for this. At age 54 I just got my first iPhone and the keyboard is too small and I neglected to turn off autocorrect. Then the screen is so small i couldnt see the error. iOS has a lot to answer for in terms of linguistic attrocitis as u may no.

Having spent the last 24 hours cleaning this kid's feted and festering sewer of an apartment, I am in no mood to reward anyone with a new bike (except maybe moi).

No problem, I share the defect of spelling and at 61, worsening eyes. Scott Pasley was a gifted builder with a big heart. If it had been one of his I would have suggested to get it. Andy

I have to agree with the folks above, everybody here seems to have the skills and certainly the resources so I’d go vintage if I were you. May I also point out that $1700 will not only cover a spectacular used bike, it will cover some egregious shipping charges?
And my third point, don’t reward your son for slacking off on domestic life skills. Someday he will meet a wonderful girl and she’s going to have explain to him in graphic detail that that won’t be happening in the future

But I think you are right. It wasnt just a mess. It was a fscking health hazard. His first appt, and only because Reed admitted too many people his year to accomodate everyone on campus, so frankly he was forced into it. But still, even with generous financial aid, the bill is ghastly, and i am suddenly in a very frugal mood.

. Chipper up! Lots of great deals showing up right now, and things don't seem to be selling so quickly. Nashbar has also been having some fantastic promotional discounts on new bikes online. Something to ride until you come across something like a nice C&V Mercian (English). I missed out on one recently..in my size..for $50 (excuse me for a second...I am starting to cry again). Nashbar also has some amazing prices for everything else.

Ive been ordering from Nashbar since about 1987 -- there were a group of us that would order stuff together when i was a grad student in Berkeley and we needed to get to the free shipping limit. You are rifht ... some fantastic deals.
I still get lots of stuff from them and Art's.

That's really weird about the photo. I had assumed you just posted an upside-down image, but after reading your previous post I went back and looked at it and right-clicked "view image." It was oriented correctly! All the more strange...

Yeah, if I open the image in a new tab, which means I just load the raw URL from flickr.com into the browser, the image displays correctly, suggesting that it is a bug in the iOS interface (the embedded image displays correctly on an iPad or iPhone).

I vote for getting it!! Love those bikes. But if it's possible fit-wise, maybe get one that is a tad small for your son, and a tad large for you so you can both ride it. IMHO, as a commuting/touring bike, you don't need to be as specific in sizing as one would with a racing bike.
I know you know, but Reed College is an outstanding school.
Funny that's a different spec than shown on the Pashley home page. Normally it's an SA 3 speed.
Clubman | Gents Racing Style City Bike | Pashley
If we're looking for votes, I''d rather buy 3 very nice 70's/80's bikes and still have change for coffee and a muffin. Like new cars, the bike loses it's value by 50% walking out the door whereas a nicely kitted 80's racer is unlikely to go down in value.
The OP may not have to worry about this but I do.

Looking on Pashley's web site this morning, the closest thing to that bike I can find is the Clubman Country, and it's $2700. Of course, since it doesn't fit it doesn't matter how much or how little it costs: a bike that doesn't fit is no bargain at any price (unless you're planning to flip it).

To the OP- are you sure you got the price right? If it really is $1700 for the CC, and not the Clubman 3 speed, then I say jump on it!!!! It's a good deal for new, hand-built UK bike.

Portland has all the good bikes. When I'm cruising CL for Pashleys and Gazelles, that's where they are.

Which site are you looking at? The official U.K. Site doesn't show the Clubman Country any longer. Also, I forgot that the CC was $2700 and not $1700.

In the end, we barely had enough room in the car for the extra mildew spores we brought home. His other bike was on the roof rack. We could have put that one on the roof rack too, and it would have got hammered with rain (and snow!!) all the way home.
He really liked the fit. He has no idea how nice a bike it is, or the difference between retro and modern parts, but if we want it, we have to drive back to get it.
I think the frame is about a 56. If anyone in Portland is looking for something like this, it looks to be a great deal at $1700. There are some minor cosmetic flaws on the front rim, but looks otherwise to be in great shape. (I assume it is new; I never explicitly asked). The photo doesn't do it justice. It is a beautiful bike. That's a Swallow with copper rivets mounted on the seat post, BTW. He thought it was much more comfortable than the B17.

If it fit me, I would have bought it for myself, and thrown all his crap into the dumpster to make room for it in the car.
(Don't worry, I have my priorities right.)

The real tragedy here is I even got advanced permission to buy it from my wife (perhaps the most mature and responsible thing I have ever done in my life), and now I went and squandered that.

The train to Portland is nice and cheap if pick your dates well. I think it's $20 to bring back a bike. Someone had a used Guvnor in my size for 300 and there was a workcycles cheap too. I was seriously thinking I could just hop the train out of Sacramento and save myself a lot of money.

It really was marked down to $1700, and I really am crying from 700 miles away now. Rub it in.

Good question. The exact page I was looking at can be found at britishbicycle.com but that wasn't the first place I found it. I thought I was looking at pashley.co.uk but at this point, who knows? It's also on Pashley's German site.
