Another bottom bracket question

I got a Campy bottom bracket for Super Record cranks. when I put it in the spindle wouldn't tighten, well as suspected its 115mm and I need a 110. Question is, are my cups fine? Can I just swap the spindle?

T-Mar 05-16-17 02:53 PM

What wouldn't tighten?
1. Fixed cup to shell?
2. Adjustable cup to shell?
3. Lockring to adjustable cup.
4. Crankarm to spindle?
5. Bolt to spindle?

Sounds like a thick and thin cup issue. That's as much as I can contribute.

Tightened the non drive cup flush with the frame. Spindle was still really loose.

.
...there were two sorts of cup/bearings for Campy record cranks. The parts are not interchangeable.

I think it was all standardized by the time Super Record came along.

Could it be possible I have a Nuovo record spindle for thick cups and I have Super Record thin cups.

Yes, or you have a 68mm spindle for a 70mm frame.

sloar 05-16-17 05:07 PM

It's a 70 spindle.

Some possibilities:

1) Spindle designed for Nuovo Record "thick" cups installed with Record "thin" cups.

2) Spindle designed for 68mm shell installed in 70mm shell.

3) Spindle designed for 68mm "thick" cups installed with "thin" cups in 70mm shell.

4) Wrong ball size. Most Campagnolo bottom brackets use 1/4" balls, but some have used 3/16" balls. 3/16" balls used in a cup/spindle combination intended for 1/4" balls may be too loose.

John, I'm thinking number one, Everything else looks correct.

Super Record road cups were also thick, like Nuovo Record, but ground for 3/16" balls.

All Pista cups were thin, as were the Record and Gran Sport cups.

You should be able to distinguish thick from thin cups visually. The thick cups have rifling in the hole for the spindle. The thin cups are smooth:

Correct, I have thin cups with a 70mm spindle.

sloar 05-16-17 06:02 PM

Is there an easy way to identify a spindle?

There should be markings on the spindle to indicate what cups and shell width it is designed to use. Perhaps this can help:

Thank you John, I just identified it as a Nuovo Record spindle using you link you posted. I guess that clears up my problem.

I had a similar battle when building the Tommi, that link John provided should be mandatory reading, and printed out for everyone using these Campag bottom brackets. I saw that link referenced in a thread here and printed it out to have with me in my garage. Glad you got your answer sloar.

Thanks Bill, It was a big let down . I got all my Super Record today and planned on building it and riding it today. I'm going to try to swap it out tomorrow or Thursday.

qcpmsame 05-16-17 08:09 PM

I guess that you have another spindle available? Or even a complete correct bottom bracket?

Yeah, my source looks like the Campy warehouse in his basement. He had at least 30 Super Record groups for me to pick from.

qcpmsame 05-16-17 08:22 PM

Good deal, but if it is still an issue, God forbid, let me see if the couple I have could help out. Semper Fi brother.

What are the markings on the spindle and what are the center measurements from bearing flange to bearing flange?

sloar 05-17-17 07:24 AM

70-ss with the exact measurements for a Nuovo Record.
