What is this "Paramount"

Picked this hot mess up for the price of admission. I could be wrong but this doesn't look like a Paramount to me. The frame is actually cleaning up very nice, the chrome has a clear coat over it and the rust spots are coming off with the clear coat. Thanks

I don't know a thing about old Paramounts but I love chromed bikes. That looks nice.

3speedslow 05-17-17 03:05 PM

Looks like it was originally painted red. Nice frame, whatever the possibilities.

Looks like an '81 Voyageur 11.8 in factory chrome:

The older chrome Paramounts had red lug lining so that actually looks correct.

You can check out the Paramount serial numbering process on the Waterford site. That will give you a definite answer.

sloar 05-17-17 03:31 PM

What throwing me is the numbers are on the b/b shell not the dropout.

Fahrenheit531 05-17-17 03:38 PM

+1 on Voyageur. Many similarities with my '82.

sloar 05-17-17 03:55 PM

Crap, I didn't think it was a Paramount. But I still had hopes. Has a nice Jim Blackburn front rack at least. I think I'm still going to clean it up and make a nice rider out of it.

The badge is Paramount, you could sell that and recoup a decent sum, otherwise-

Call it Paramountish.

Never seen a early Paramount (1970s) without Nervex lugs and those are not Nervex. Roger

That will certainly make a nice rider Sloar!

The Voyageur frame is really nice. Quad butted Japanese Chromo tubing, I had the chrome 25" and it weighed the same as my 531 frame, 4.25lbs. Sold it to my fried and he's still riding it.

Schwinn used Prugnat lugs on Paramounts from 1967-1970 with some Paramounts still using them into 1971.

thumpism 05-17-17 04:58 PM

Plus, you'll probably discover it has a stem diameter of .833 and that's not what a Paramount would use.

bikingshearer 05-17-17 05:01 PM

That serial number does not correspond with any reported Paramount serial numbering system.

Determine the Manufacturing Date

I have no idea if it is a Voyager or not - I know nothing about those.

Looks like it will make a nice rider, though.

I noticed that.

Kactus I did say 1970s and those are not Prugnat lugs either. Just lower end lugs that were not hand filed. These are the lugs on my Jan 1974 P10-9 for example. Roger

You said you had "never seen a early Paramount (1970s) without Nervex lugs and those are not Nervex". I was just pointing out that 1970 & some 1971 Paramounts did come without Nervex lugs. And thanks for pointing it out, but I was aware that those aren't Prugnat lugs.

Beautiful '74 P-10 BTW.

The lugs on my '71 P-13.

I suspect this isn't the quad-butted variety. Mine specifies "double butted top and bottom tubes" on the frame decal. Same SN format (81 03 15424), same location, and apparently my frame was also built in '81 though all components pointed to '82 model year.

RiddleOfSteel 05-17-17 09:08 PM

That critter looks a whole lot like my '77 all-chrome Super Le Tour 12.2. Same lugs, same seat stay tops, same 0.833" quill stem requirement. Whether a Voyageur or a Super Le Tour 12.2, either will be well built, the chrome will polish up (and the rust can be removed), and it will ride very nicely!

Narhay 05-17-17 10:43 PM

Was it a Paramount cost of admittance or more like a voyageur or super sport ticket?

sloar 05-18-17 12:16 PM

What's the chances of finding an exact original donor bike 24 hours later for free.
