Early 80's Serotta Resto-Mod

Picked up this bike a few months ago in fairly rough shape with a hodgepodge of components. After a deep clean and rust removal, I built it back up using some of my favorite Dura Ace components from several different groups.

Unfortunately, the only serial number on the frame is on the drive side drop out and all but the last two digits have been obliterated. Based on the Dura Ace EX sticker (came with the crankset, now available in the classifieds cough cough) and design elements such as the over bb cable routing, flat crown fork with the four suit cutouts (cinelli?) huge tire clearance The frame appears to be from the late 70's or 80's, so pretty early in the Serotta timeline. One of my favorite things about this frame is the tire clearance, currently pictured with 30c Strada Biancas, but it can fit up to 36c no problem.

As I mentioned, the build is cross-generational Dura Ace, broken down as follows:

7410 Crankset - most beautiful Shimano ever made imho...
7700 STI Shifters and RD
7800 FD
7402 hubset laced to matrix rims (a bit skinny for my taste, a new set of rims will be the final touch on this build..)
74xx stem and seatpost
Cinelli Tour Bars
7200 headset

Obviously, the decals are near gone and there are some rough patches in the paint as well as a small ding in the top tube. One day I might jump in and do a full restoration, but for now, I am enjoying the ride and patina too much to care. Thanks for looking, fire away with questions, comments, concerns. Nice! I have a lingering desire for a Serotta. I agree with your assessment of the crank. I have a 7402 and think it is kinda ugly.

Very cool. Nice seat cluster. My Serotta, (see avatar) is one I will never sell so SJX426 keep your lingering desire until you find one.

Looks like my size, can I have it?

Remarkable bike, and Yes = tire clearance is a nice quality.
I've got a couple that take 30mm (and even a bit larger, if you don't object to tight clearances) and they are hugely versatile bikes with just a wheel swap.


Not a fan of the early Shimano integrated shifters, but give them credit for being first. And I'm not bashing their performance either. We get used to what we get used to, eh?

I have a frame about the same year or two, and about the same size. I believe that if you have the first part of the serial number, the initial two numbers are the year. Mine is a Club Special from 1983. Differences: mine has a rear brake bridge that's not tubular but cast, flattop, with panto there, but not on the concave seat stay caps like yours. Also, no separate tangs below the fork crown (nice touch). But like yours, Portacatena rear dropouts, and all painted, no chrome. 63 cm CTT. I think that the first year for Portacatena dropouts was 1978. Unfortunately, mine will only fit a 28 mm tire between the chain stays.

to see if you can decode your serial number. At the very least you might make contact with some folks who can help...

Yea, I posted it on paceline too to see if anyone could tell, but as I said, only the last two serial numbers remain on the rear drop out wich don't give much to go on. Apparently, around this period, they were putting SNs on the fork steerer as well, but nothing on mine, so I'm limited to visual cues.

As an aside, a 30-mile shakedown ride yesterday confirms it rides better than it looks. Incredibly comfortable and capable on rough roads and gravel, especially with the larger rubber, but stiff and efficient under load. Lovely!

Beautiful bike and great component choices. I like it the way it is. It would lose some mojo if repainted.

Concur. Full repaints are for bikes with really rough finishes.

Totally agree on a full repaint. I already did a deep oxalic soak to remove/convert the surface rust, so I may try to color match the paint as best as possible to cover the few nicks and bruises...

A friend of mine had one of these in 1979. He let me try it out. Wow, what a ride. His was a criterium design. I can't tell if yours is, too. I had never ridden such a nimble bike before that encouraged such hard riding. I'm glad you're enjoying it, but I'm not surprised.
