Low-end goodness

Couldn't resist making an offer, because of the brand name: Springfield.

And the seller's pic and comment ("DHL man not included in the sale"): :)

https://myalbum.com/photo/7N9jNkmJNxOL/1k0.jpg

Further pics of stamped drop-outs and cottered cranks weren't very promising.

Anyway, this is what I picked up yesterday:

I'm quite happy with it.

USAZorro 06-22-17 01:41 PM

Not bad at all. Should look sharp once you work your magic on it.

gomango 06-22-17 01:50 PM

I like it.

That would make a very nice city bike with straight bars. imho

It'll shine right up.

Are you going to treat it to new consumables?

noobinsf 06-22-17 01:50 PM

I see a Super Coureur, so at least you weren't saddled (ahem) with a regular coureur.

I'll let myself out.

3speedslow 06-22-17 02:13 PM

Great snag! Should go very nicely with your other Springfields. Full Italian too!

You are having quite a good bike acquisition streak.

1989Pre 06-22-17 02:23 PM

It looks pretty nice, to me! Nice job on the lug lining. What kind of lugs are they?

juvela 06-22-17 02:30 PM

-----

Clearly too piccolo for non-fixie; no ladder will be required for mounting!

It is however, just me size; I'll be right over. :thumb:

In the meantime, get that attacco doon - we don't want our non-fixie engaging in any impromptu acrobatics.

Me fave period - mid-LX's.

What be her pedals?

We are all waiting with bated breath to hear the pillar measurement.

What words reside in the diamond stamping in the outer face of the crank arms?

Don't permit The Simpsons to get wind of this...they'll be all over it.

Thanks guys, for all the kind / helpful / funny replies. Much appreciated!

Yes and no. The frame is way too small for me, so that will hopefully end up with a new, correctly-sized owner someday, after we've established what it's made of and who built it. But most of the parts will definitely end up on my own rides. The wheels I'm certainly keeping (high-flange Normandy hubs, tied and soldered spokes, early Weinmann rims - wait 'till I've cleaned them up and shod them with some decent tires). The same goes for the Universal 61 brakes and levers. I've been looking to try those pretty Italian MAFAC alternatives for a quite a while now.

Actually, that saddle looks rather snazzy IMO, is in quite decent shape, and feels less hard than it looks. I remember devinfan posting one a while back that I fell in love with. So I'm definitely going to try it.

One of the things I want to find out. My first thought was EKLA, but I haven't been able to match them as yet.

The pedals are Atoms, I believe:

I spent thirty minutes looking for my calipers, following your question. Didn't find them, pulled the seat post, and read in nice huge print: 26.8

Hermesse. And unfortunately it's just the drive side crank. The other one is missing, along with the last half inch of the otherwise very nice Stronglight spindle ... :(

Kevindale 06-22-17 04:07 PM

That's a real dusty Springfield...

What a nice find! I would love to see that paint with some wax on it. Great components all round, too. It is definitely a nice saddle, you just have to ride it long enough for the sit-bone depressions to form. I also reamed out the rear bag mounting slots because the stock ones are very narrow, but it was an easy task. Lovely bike. if you want you can fill in the words Super Coureur easily with paint, it makes it look cooler and more super.http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/...psexmkgt1p.jpg

And, uh, a hit of Armor All?

non-fixie 06-22-17 04:42 PM

Yes, that's the one! Thanks for posting it here. And now that I see that pic again, it might actually be a nice weight weenie addition to my Alan as well. :)

Assumed at first glance that they would be BOCAMA but went through all me materials for that maker without finding the pattern. Just means they are not shown amngst the material I have, not that they cannnot be from this maker.

So then I thought "well, then they MUST be FRANCOLAM (NERVEX)." Same thing once again - not shown in catalogue.

Crown is Vagner PL. Ends set is Campag Sport 1010/1. Pedal set is dancewear Nr. XXXVI.

Thanks for all of responses non-fixie! Fine job with the imagini. :thumb: With regard to hauteur, frame looks like LVII c-t-t. Broken BB spindle - that took some force formidable! Especially sad as it is a Verot Competition hollow.

non-fixie 06-22-17 05:07 PM

I found a serial number: 624. Not a very surprising number, as I'd already found pictures of number 710 online, presumed to be from '71. Metz started his shop in 1948, so linear interpolation between those two data points would make my find a '68.

That seems to jibe with my guess of mid-sixties, based on what I assume to be the original parts: Campagnolo Record derailleurs, 1010/1 dropouts, Universal 61 brakes, early ttt bar stem ...

juvela: good eye, the frame is indeed a 57 C-T. Top tube is 56, C-C.

About the lugs: when looking for the frame builders who built for Willem Metz, the shop owner, two famous names keep popping up: Jasper Bouma and Jacobus de Jonge (a.k.a. Witte Ko). They may have been ambitious enough to file their own shapes from existing models.

For readers curious as to EKLA patterns there is some discussion of them here. Unfortunately, was not able to find anything matching the set on this machine. :(

Ekla bicycle lugs

LVII c-t-t is indeed joost me size. will have to look into drayature... :ride:

Really enjoyed this thread! Makes me look forward to when I have the space for bike projects! Time cramped apartment atm.

As regards chainset -

Our Munny has posted two models at VB, the Standard and the Grand Luxe. Set on this bicycle matches neither.

Standard -

Update: my pedal is labelled "Grand Luxe" on the inside, just like in Munny's pic.

I was wondering about that! ;)

Your example has a relieved spider. So evidently not all Grand Luxe are identical.

Munny writes that they were in production for less than a decade.

Regarding EKLA -

Checked the Brown Brothers Catalogue of Anno Domini MCMLII. It has one illustration for lugs & text mentioning two items on page sixty-nine. Page seventy-one has an illustration of three crown patterns and that seems to be it. (These are the same entries reproduced at the ClassicLightweightsUK entry linked to earlier.)

The lugsets receive some discussion in this forum thread:

https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?t=79621

Of course non-fixie can easily scan the Flemische sites. :)

Regarding headset -

We have as yet no image of upper stack. Wonder if it could be a WF. In this photo it appears lower head cup may have a divot out of it:

https://myalbum.com/photo/SXBQnsX61pxS/1k0.jpg

...or perhaps this is simply how the schmutz has arranged itself.

You didn't get the DHL guy? You got ripped off.

Every other Springfield I get- I get the DHL guy with it.

non-fixie 06-23-17 11:28 AM

Got a few hours off work today, and managed to do some work on the Springfield.

Some more information and pictures:

I removed most of the parts, and took a damp rag to the frame. More dirt and grime and less rust than expected. The paint job is a bit tired, though.

https://myalbum.com/photo/WEg6iRkJ4cc0/1k0.jpg

The decals are in pretty good shape:

https://myalbum.com/photo/pshJ4uk5lC8h/1k0.jpg

"Kamp. v. Nederland" stands for "Champion of the Netherlands":

https://myalbum.com/photo/d3qZ3RrUucxc/1k0.jpg

Unfortunately the headbadge went AWOL ...

https://myalbum.com/photo/T6kbn15fYzvN/1k0.jpg

... but it would have looked like this one, I think. A little man carrying a huge wrench:

Yes sir, I did. But the seller was a Frisian. There's just no arguing with those Frisians ... :(

The headset is a Lightrace, BTW:
