On The Scale Of Criminal To Clever . . .

An ethical and/or aesthetic question for the C&V geekery.

My daily commute bike is a Peugeot PSV. Mavic FD RD, brakes, hubs, rims. I'm going to build a dynohub front wheel this summer so as to have reliable light for the next winter. The problem is, my front and rear hubs will no longer match. This bothers me more than it would a normal person. I've always felt that tires, rims and hubs should match front to rear. Anything else is like wearing mismatched shoes.

So my solution is to use a polished dynohub and apply some repro "MAVIC" stickers to both hubs, thus creating the illusion of matchy-matchy hubs.

Question: Is this
1. Criminal fakery, 40 lashes with a greasy chain!
2. Beyond pathetic, but not quite criminal
3. No more pitiable than the typical C&V behavior
4. Clever indeed, 1 point for Gryfindor!

me I would just get dual rechargeable headlights and then not to have two worry about the dynohub......

but if put to a vote I would say 3 and 4

3. I'd vote 4, but I don't know what a Gryfindor is

I've considered re-badging some of my more modern Mavic rims (90s machined-sidewall MA3s/Open Pros) with vintage Mavic decals for my own amusement. I'd of course reveal this if I ever sold them.

'Course I'm nothing if not OCD. Sounds like you suffer similarly, John

This required a thread?

Oh, the correct answer is #5, build a different bike around this alternate hub.

Ditto. Those USB rechargeables are sweet. You can also get lightweight secondary battery packs that can charge up the lights on the road.

That is my plan. I just picked up 4 of them at Lowe's last night for $.90 each on clearance.

I share your passion for matchy-matchy wheels. As such I fully appreciate how pitiable this behavior is, all the worse because you'll know what you've done and will probably never completely silence the inner critic who does not accept what you've done.

I have a pair of slightly mismatched wheels that evolved like this:

1. I built a pair of matching wheels with SRAM X.9 disc hubs, but had the foresight to use rims with a machined braking surface.
2. I later wanted to use just the front wheel on a bike with a mullet disc/canti setup so I built a nearly matching rear wheel with the same rim and a 105 hub of the same color.
3. Later still, I replaced the frame so I could use the original rear wheel with the matching front.
4. To give the now-orphaned rear wheel a helpmeet I built another front with the same rim but foolishly thought I could get by with a Deore front hub of the same color.

It had never occurred to me to re-sticker one of the mismatched hubs. I might have to do that now.

Think the two hubs in question don't look similar enough to make the rebadging effective. Give it a wack for sure but I'm doubtful it'll scratch the ocd itch.

Plug everything in and stare at it until acceptance or the other thing happens. I'm guessing acceptance. The SON hubs are terrifically pretty bits of kit.

I've been considering re-branding the Modolo brakeset on my Vitus 979 as Mavic. Modolo made them for Mavic, it's the same brakeset!

No, no, no.

You must get a high flange Dura Ace rear hub, silver not black; and one of the Shimano dynamo hubs that has one plain large flange with no windows.

Then you must drillium and millium the plain flange, and polish-y-'em both hubs until they same flange design and finish.

Use matching QR's, this is important.

And a sinewave, of course, so you can charge your dual USB headlights.

If it was mine, no fake Mavics. Just replace the front wheel and keep the original one for when you want to be period correct. Dull, I know...

I'm with repechage. #5/none of the above. A Mavic front hub looks nothing like a Dyno hub. You won't fool anyone who cares a lick about the Mavic bits to begin with, and you'll still know you have unmatched hubs. A clear justification for N+1.
