Photobucket is holding my pictures for ransom

Wow! Photobucket is holding my pictures for ransom. They want $400 to allow 3rd party sharing. I can't open any photo I have shared here. Unbelievable.

Yep, I got the same. I've had an account since 2007, and used it only for sharing photos online.

I just deleted my account and will search for another picture sharing site(free).

that seems like an odd way to run a photo sharing service. Is this in their terms of service?

Have you ruled out the chance that someone else is posing as photobucket and trying to scam you?

I use postimage.org

I believe you can make an account if you'd like... and it's always been free.

Unless their site has been hacked, it is for real. I go to my photobucket account and it will not let me open any picture I shared on a third party site. It gives me an error image that says I need to update my account. I will give it a few days to see if it is s hack, but if it is real, they can go to you know where.

Photobucket System and Website Status Updates - Photobucket

Lots of complaints. What a strange business decision. I bet this decision gets reversed.

I use imgur.com to put up photos for forum posts.

Yup, several tech site stories about this today.

Photobucket just pulled a Yahoo. Good luck with that. It was always a crap image dump site anyway.

I may go back to using Flickr, although they screwed over longtime premium members a few years ago too.

I been having problems and deleted almost all of my stuff not long ago and again just recently. Glad I have all my bike pics on the cloud. I am just going to upload to all FB as private for a backup and post to my private bike page. Don't like my bikes floating around the internet anyway. I'm becoming an ol' bugger. Lol!

I was ready to say goodbye anyway to Photobucket this year as their site was already acting like it was injecting Ad spam viruses to my system everytime I try to upload anything......and it took forever just to upload just a couple of shots!
I'll consider all my pics lost...... Time to turn a new leaf and find a better site!
Good riddance PB!!

$400? I would have thought they could turn quite a profit if they started charging $10 a year, or so.

That is the reason to host locally on this site. Image size reduction is a pain, but one doesn't have to rely on other sites to preserve your images forever.

This sucks - I'm seeing a lot of those "Photobucket Speedometers" on threads today

I recommend Flickr to those Photobucketers looking for another host. I've had my account since 2008, turned Pro about a year later (about $25 a year, peanuts) and haven't had a single issue. 5 out of 5 stars.

What a stupid decision. They're going to lose their entire base to other hosting sites. I bet at least half the images posted on Bike Forums are blocked too.

I think I pay $20/yr for Photobucket and have never had an issue. I probably don't even need the $20 version since I ebay/Craigslist a lot less now.

$400?!?

I also use flickr though it does have its little peculiarities. hopefully they do not follow the same route as photobucket.

hosting the pics here is fine, but that is no real guarantee they wont disappear- bikeforums could close up just like any other place!

Business venture.

Someone want to develop a hosting site that can easily fix photobucket broken links by simply replacing "photobucket" with "siteNameHere" with the same link structure after that?

Basically you'd just have to clone photobucket's link structure. Also you could possibly use it to find your photobucket hosted pictures?

Thanks for the recommendation: I'll probably do just that.

I know bandwidth is not free, but this seems to be a bit a of a Shkreli maneuver. I hope it resolves itself.

For other Photobucket users: you can download your entire album (sans videos and gifs) as a single .zip file. This still works at the moment.

WOW, that really SUX! I have been using a paid account at FotoTime - Free Online Photo & Video Sharing - Share, Sell, Host & Print Digital Images for quite a few years with no problems at all. They also offer free hosting, but will dump them after a period of time. I forget how long.
Anyway, I recommend them, but this is only my two cents.

Well, there goes years of shared C&V history. Nothing worse than going to an old thread and the exact answer you've been looking for has a big 'image moved or deleted' icon.

I guess I will host my own photos from now on.

That's pretty ridiculous. As Narhay notes, that's especially damaging for old threads with unique photos or 'how-to' examples.

I use imgur.com. It's quick and easy - you can either make an account so you can sign in later to view photos you've previously updated or you can just do it without signing in if you want to throw up a quick photo or album to link to.

Yep! I started noticing it a day or two ago. I've used Photobucket almost exclusively for hosting my pictures for 10 years, and was a happy user for most of them. Every online discussion in which I've posted a picture will now have one of those ransom boxes.

Like you say, one of the great things about the Internet is the ability to look up old discussions, and it pains me whenever information disappears.
