It was great meeting you. If you ever record your gravel song, let me know where I can get a copy.

I am seriously considering bringing knee and elbow pads next year to strap on before a couple of the deeper sections. Or maybe I should just do as you're saying and get out and develop some skills before then.

Well, we found out that one can drive up to the swimmin' hole. Take turns driving up and dropping off for practice runs...

What if I missed a turn, everybody has made that turn and when I get to it (or past it) I see nobody? So Ben goes into survival mode. This road is a main drag. It goes downhill and will lead me to civilization. Probably toward Tillamook, but certainly somewhere. The well traveled tire tracks make that clear. It's mid-afternoon. I am really not interested in being in this woods after dark. I could call the others, but since I don't know where I am, what can I tell them?

So I go down. And figure "I'm doing this. It may be right, it may be wrong but I am going to enjoy it." And I did (except that round crown). Got to the pavement and it seemed from the directions I should go right and from there, all went well except the miles were really long. The rest you know.

Ben
I got up early Saturday before the alarm went off, went downstairs and realized I hadn't printed off cue sheets. Good thing I did!

Sounds like a plan. Maybe in the process we can figure out how to drop off supplies there before next year's ride.

Supplies? You didn't get any hot dogs and beer from the family that was camping there? Man, you really missed out...

I think my Surly Straggler 650b with discs would survive. Unless I do some serious training, I wouldn't.
You think a recumbent with wide tires could do this? At least if/when I fall it wouldn't be so far down.

Conversely, you can develop a respect for the Wisdom of: In some situations, speed is Not my friend. Taming an unsuspended frame, downhill bombing, over large jagged rocks on Forest Service 'unimproved' (and recently even more under-budgeted for maintenance) roads might be one of those situations.

As a taller, larger rider = I fall further & harder.
But who am I to restrict a bit recklessness.
Let the fun begin again.

Listen to Bruce:

Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun
Oh, but Mama, that's where the fun is!

I believe it was Oscar Wilde who said the only thing worse than going fast on gravel is not going fast on gravel.

You definitely need to control your speed on those gravel descents, but if you try to hit the brakes at the wrong time that can be even worse. Fortunately, the actual descents weren't bad on this ride. They generally had enough bare spots that you could keep things more or less under control.

It was the more gently sloped parts where the rocks were piled thick that gave me trouble.

I see that many are looking for a bike that converts a type 2 ride to a type 1.

Update: my type 3 knee is healing nicely.

Not having ridden your track, my assumed knowledge was wrong. Rough edged pond stones and speed looks (to me) to be a recipe for injury. Gravel, sheesh.., I laugh in the face of gravel on my long wheelbase rig with 35mm Schwalbe Marathon Plus. My problem on gravel with lesser tires is the inability to concentrate 100+% on maintaining the right lines and speed, usually the scenery, a day dream, or something else diverts me = dangerous for the unlucky.
