Bike Serial Number Question

I'm in need of help with a bike serial number that I can't seem to find in google search. The S/N is J3787379; can anyone tell me what the J and the number s stand for? The frame is from a 1983 Sears Free Spirit 10 speed bike.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

The "J" is probably an assembly plant code.
The first number might be the last digit of the year made.
The second and third numbers might be the day of the year made (78th day, in this case) or a month/day code.
The remaining numbers are likely the consecutive number.
Note the 2nd number may be the month and the remaining numbers a consecutive number.
