Sturmey Archer AW 3-speed - Proper Actuation
I recently picked up a 1973 Schwinn Speedster. It seems to be in original condition with normal wear and tear but not hard use. Just the normal dings and scratches.
I had a tune-up performed at the LBS and am having trouble shifting. Since this is my first 3-speed with this type of shift mechanism, I wanted to verify the shifting process. First to verify that the bike was tuned correctly. Second to make sure it isn't me.
Can anyone here provide me with procedure to properly shift?

If you mean 'how do I shift gears while riding', it's pretty straightforward; lightly back off on the pedals, move the gear selector, and resume pedaling. If you mean 'how do I properly adjust the shifter actuating mechanism', that's another whole can of worms. Which are you asking about?

I was asking 'how do I shift gears while riding'. I am having a problem and I am now looking at 'how do I properly adjust the shifter actuating mechanism'.

With the sturmey hub--compleatly loose(or no cable)will put the hub in high gear. With the cable pulled tight--you are in low gear. Now to find second gear.Set the cable where it's just loose---in high gear.Pull the shifter to low and re-tighten till the hub is in low gear.Shift back to high and see if it still works.then quarter turns till you get second gear.Don't forget these bikes need oil.Not 3-in-one use singer sewing machine oil.A couple of drops in the oil hole once a month.A drop on shifter ,and cable too.Don't get oil on tyres.
