Steve Bauer Sirocco drivetrain advice

Hi everyone,

I bought a vintage Steve Bauer Sirocco yesterday and would appreciate some advice on upgrading the drivetrain since the crank arms don't match. The right side crank arm and chain rings are Miche (Nuovo Record copy with fluted arms) and I think they're original, but the left side is a Sugino XD2L. It has a $15 price tag on it, so it has obviously been replaced.

I got the bike fairly cheap and won't mind spending a couple hundred to fix it up and I'm wondering what to do about the cranks. I did find a used Miche crankset on eBay that matches what's on there now for US$60.00, (that's more than I paid for the bike) but I'm wondering if I would be better off buying something different/better/easier to find. The bike is a bit rough and is a mix of parts including Miche, Shimano 105, Sakae bars and seat post, Suzue hubs, Wienman front rim and Araya back rim. So I'm not concerned about keeping it original, but would like to keep the vintage look.

Here's a couple pics of the bike. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

to be honest i don't think the miche was original either.

pretty sure it was a sugino vp or a sakae CR crank or somewhere along those lines.

If you don't care about keeping it original buy a shimano 600 crank and BB, they're cheap and super solid parts better than what would have came with the bike. Figure if bb is english or italian. it should be english (68mm)

if you really like how it rides and want to spruce it up more then keep an eye out for a cheap bike off craiglist that has a full matching grouppo and swap out later.

Thanks for the quick reply. That sounds like good advice. I'll check out eBay for some of those cranksets.

I took apart the BB today and the bearings are shot. So I'm thinking a SHIMANO BB-UN26 will probably be a good idea as well. The BB is 68x122.

Well that narrows it down dramatically.

The point is, well this. Put your location in your personal info.

Well, you only listed the province in your personal info. As the "Noobies - post your location!" thread says "You don't have to be specific", so I updated it to say Southern Ontario. If you want to PM me I'd be happy to provide more details.

Cheers.

No you don't have to be specific but if you live in Guelph and 5 other members live in the area, there's a great resource for you without having to drive about or pay money to Canada Post. No one's data mining here.

The bb length is important, now you know it's english. the length of the spindle doesn't matter if you're switching bb's and cranks. Cranks from different manufacturers sit differently on their bb axels. Some cranks are shallower than others.

for example shimano tri color bb's for english are 113mm so if you bought a shimano sealed bb just make sure it's square taper and 113mm. it should fit the same. you cannot buy an ISO taper bb, you have to make sure it's JIS.

Picked up and customized this Steve Bauer Sirocco several years ago. I believe this was the original drive and transmission set-up...

Decide on your crank and then worry about the spindle.
Too bad, the Toronto vintage show was on yesterday and there were a couple of cranks that would have been perfect for that bike.
Since you are in Southern Ontario there are many bike co-ops - one of them will likely have a crank. Otherwise, there is Backpedaling in Guelph, although they are not cheap.

Thanks very much for the info. I was reading about ISO and JIS last night and was getting a bit confused about what to buy. I'm glad you mentioned the spindle length as well. I thought the new one would need to be the same length as the old one. If it depends on the cranks I'll get those first and then order the bb.

Thanks for the tip. I think we were posting at the same time. I used to live in Toronto, but I'm about 3 hours away now in Sarnia and I don't think there's much around here.

Thanks for replying. I read your posts about the Sirocco when I was trying to decide whether or not to buy this one. Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought you had replaced the cranks and derailleurs: "Though I could have installed a triple ring crank set, the cost would have jumped considerably. With that in mind, and following Abbey's advice on her riding conditions, a Sugino VP crank, with a 52/42 ring set, delivered power to a six speed, wide range cog set. Of course, using all of those gears required shifting. I selected a Suntour Accushift indexed transmission..." (BUILDING ABBEY'S STEVE BAUER)

All the nice people here with advice and offers to help have caused me to reconsider.

Cheers.

Thanks for the new pics. I was looking at some Biopace cranks on eBay last night, but wasn't sure if they would be appropriate.

Thanks for sharing. Can anyone tell what kind of cranks are on that bike? I noticed it's a Chinook and mine is a Sirocco, but they're both Tange 900, double butted CroMo frames. I wonder how they fit into the Steve Bauer hierarchy?

They look nice. Are you selling? They look a lot like the Miche crank I have now. Would they be considered another Nuovo Record clone?

NR clones are 144 bcd as a rule. But it really doesn't matter, any decent Japanese crankset from the 80's will suit your bike. The one in the previous post could be a Sakae Super Custom or an SR Aerox, so many looked similar to that. What I remember from the Bauer days is that they were often parts bins specials, all decent parts from many different groups. You can outfit it with whatever parts come your way.

Thanks to mapleleafs-13 a Shimano 600 crankset is on it's way and I bought a Shimano BB-UN26 68 x 113mm at my LBS today. So with any luck I'll have the Bauer rolling again soon.

Thanks for all the assistance.

Your putting the cart before the horse. Bottom Brackets match cranksets. You need to decide on a crankset you want to use then get the BB that matches it with the correct threading to match the frame.

What is the rest of the components on the bike?

If you can determine the bolt pattern on the Miche crank arm there may be a market for them.

Thanks for your input, but a couple other people already made this point about 15 posts back. As I said earlier today I am getting a Shimano 600 crankset and a 113mm Shimano sealed BB as recommended above. Is there is any problem with this combination?
