Mystery Cable or Lanyard Guides?

These small plastic widgets were in the bottom of a box of NOS/new take-off bike touring parts I acquired from the mid-70's. Any idea what they are? Some kind of cable or strap guide? The small captured cap for the center hole just adds to the mystery.

Bizzarre looking; could they have been used to inject lubrication into the middle of a cable run?

I think @tiger1964 is on the right track. I have seen similar devices for oiling motorcycle cables prior to installation.

I'm pretty sure there oil guides for older style center pull brakes/cables.

EXACTLY what they are.

They're for the unlined brake cables that were SOP BITD.

You use a razor to cut a small patch out of the housing, slip it on with the port over your new entrance hold and cinch it with the clips. The slight curve is intended to flex the coil open making for better penetration of the oil.

Having used these myself before line cables took over, I can say with certainty that they worked very nicely.

I have a 83 gazelle market bike with a drum brake front wheel that has one of these on the cable housing.

Somehow that's a new one for me. Never seen those before - must have been before my time. Kind of a neat idea really. Thanks for sharing.
