New addition - Carrera in Columbus EL

I have been fortunate to add a couple of really nice bikes to the stable recently. Here is the newest - a mid 90's Carrera as ridden by the team in the mid 90's with Marco Pantani. I got this for a nice price off ebay. It was one of those single picture, sparsely described ads that I suspected wouldn't get much interest and I was correct. I asked the seller to confirm the tubing and he put up a pic of the Columbus EL sticker so I put up the opening, and only bid.

It arrived pretty dusty but with a nice condition Record 8 speed Ergo group and Mavic Reflex clincher wheels. I cleaned off the dust layer and found a frame that looked like new with only a couple of small dings. I've never been so pleasantly surprised with a buy! I switched the group out to a Record 10 with compact crank as I want to put serious miles on the hills around here and I tend to leave the 39 and 42 tooth chain ring bikes alone when there is really hard climbing to be done.

Here she is after the first ride today.

Interesting features of this bike:

1) The seat cluster treatment with I guess you would say "buried" seat stay caps

2) Chain stay bridge integrated into the bottom bracket lug

3) Curved seat stays

The sticker is Columbus EL "custom". I think it might be a version of EL-OS as the top tube and seat tube measure larger than on my Columbus EL Ciocc. Down tube also is ovalized at the BB.

First impressions on the ride: This bike is a racer! Fairly stiff, you feel the bumps in the road, but not uncomfortable on this first short ride. Riding in the drops felt good and it accelerates quickly. The only really flat stretch of the ride had a pretty stiff headwind but the bike responded well to the best tempo pace my old legs could crank out. In summary I'm super excited about this bike!

Those are called "fastback" style seatstays.....
Each manufacturer does it slightly different from the others, but they all do not have seatstays caps, coned or domed ends.....

Congratulations. Those were really nice bikes, very well/cleanly built. The slightly ovalised at the BB downtube was a useful feature at stiffening that area. The paintwork was really nice...flashy, but tasteful for a racing bike. This is the model "Zeus".....

That is beautiful! Lots of nice touches on the frame. Is the DT oversize?

That's a purdy bike right there. Very nice. Love the paint and the frame looks oh-so-clean. What size is it - 58?

Those were the Shiz when they came out. I wanted to get a frame, but the distribution in the US was wonky.

Nice to see one again and hear your impressions!

Thanks all.

@Bianchigirll - the DT looks oversized - it measures 31.9, ovalized at the BB. Seat tube and top tube measure 29.8.

@55/Rad - it is a 59 per BB markings. Top tube measures just under 58 c-c. I need a 110 stem for this and of course that's the only size missing from my box of about a dozen stems. I got an Origin 8 Ultimate . It has a face plate which is a refreshing change from a classic quill.

@Chombi1 - Good to know re: fastback. I'd always assumed that just referred to the seat stay joining on the aft end of the seat tube.

Here's the pic from the ad. I figured from the pic that he group would at least be Chorus; pleased that it turned out to be Record. Looks like a '96 group per my Campy catalog.

Took it out today with a buddy along the Maury River near Lexington. Mostly false flat with a couple of climbs. Couldn't find any faults with it (my legs are another story). Had one sharp descent with a couple of hairpins. Hit them fairly fast and comfortable. Felt like I could have done it faster if the road wasn't so beat up and I had known the route better. Climbed well and felt good with tempo riding. Highly recommend this frame if you're looking for something a little different.

That's a beautiful and well-kept bike. We C&Vers tend to forget that 1995 was 22 years ago. I see it has the rounded shoulders on the fork crown like your Gion Italia and my de Bernardi. I'd never seen one of those before those two. It also has the painted dropouts with chrome stays. And I love the fastback seat stays. Beautiful.

If you look closely at Pantani's bike there -and the one behind him on the car and a few others- you can see that those bikes have no lugs and oversized tubing. Those bikes were the Carrera model "Pegasus" and were made from an aluminum-ceramic metal matrix material. It was pretty advanced stuff and they were beautifully built with smoothed tig welding, etc. The bikes were very light for 1995-96 at sub 17 lbs with the typical team Campy Record 9v kit, Cinelli Grammo stems (usually) and Selle Italia Flite or Mythos saddles. They gave nothing away to the team issue steel bikes either..BUT they were expensive and the material was difficult for the welders to work with. I am nostalgic for that era when a team's bike sponsor tried very hard to supply their teams with the best and custom-sized materiel...Carrera was definitely one of those outfits. Then again, they should be as the bike company was started by the directeur if the team (Davide Boifava) and a partner (Luciano Bracchi)

Uhmmm... personally, I'd take this lugged, steel Carrera over any lugless version, any time!
