Little ring for hills and the big ring for hills is one of the best idea's cycling ever had. But all these fixie wannabe's want a single tiny do all ring. Makes no sense!

I guess he rode his bike standing up as the gears were inappropriate.
When you stand up, it stresses components, especially the chain.

The hill doesn't look that steep, but their faces show a lot of struggle.

Cancellara's problem was he always had to reign in his power. If he stood up on the Koppenberg he would've stripped the teeth off his crank. He obviously got a little excited at Flanders.

He could drop you like a sack of potatoes at this moment completely clean.

Single chainring makes perfect sense if it gives you the gear range you need. A 40x11-40 gives you 101"~27". Go with a 10t if you want higher than 101", or bump it way up to a 42t. One chainring/derailleur/shifter is simpler than two.

As for "fixie wannabe's," whatevs. I ride fixies, I ride shifties, I like clean lines and simple drivetrains. When you Be, there ain't no Wanna.
