I had to leave town for work the day the bike arrived, so I get back, want to throw some pedals on it to take her for a short ride and they don't fit, it's that Italian 9/16 x 20F thing. Dropped her off at the LBS to tap them out to the standard 9/16 x 20, get her back Monday 
I had campy cranks on my 78 Raleigh Competition. The threads are the same as any other pedal you buy today. The snug fit is likely just the threads on the pedals being at the opposite end of the tolerances from crank. Not really uncommon. Taps and dies wear out. Also might be that someone buggered the threads up previously. Either way, chasing the threads is a good idea.
I'd think the mechanic at the bike shop would notice if they were not the same and would ask before destroying them.

It's pretty simple, and a common practice, I've read that Campagnolo even had a set of taps (or chasers) to convert Italian threads to standard BSC threads, the difference is minimal, and you 'can' force the pedals on, I'd rather do it the right way, the pic below illustrates the differences in threads.
I got the bike back yesterday and she rides fantastic, my GT is like a truck compared to the Paramount.

Sorry, being terribly vintage myself, I'd forgotten about the slight differences in the Italian-BSC/American thread pitch and depth even for the pedals. I'm acutely aware of that with bottom brackets and other threaded areas. Having continued to use period matching Campagnolo pedals with Campagnolo cranks continued to blind me to the use of modern or US sourced and threaded pedals and potential issues - my mistake. Apparently I wasn't alone.
Glad you have your pedals and cranks matched up now. New pics on which pedals you're using?
As for the paint, I've recently gone through that as well with another road Paramount, '64 vintage which apparently was repainted and re-decaled (by the factory?) to mid 70's TEAM SCHWINN track livery. In reading others' experience, apparently some factory repaints were updated to then current decals, even down to the Reynolds decal of the later time period.

I just threw a pair of MTB pedals on her to she what she rides like, most likely put some Shimano 520s on her once I get done tearing down & cleaning her. The derailleur has some wobble in it I need to look at too. At the same time I'm rebuilding my $1 goodwill Le Tour too, in the little time that work and my wife allow for bicycle fun...

UPDATE ON MY PARAMOUNT
Got the handlebars re-taped, new hoods, new tires & a replacement rear derailleur. Now I'm looking for a black & yellow seat. Went on an 18 mile ride this morning, she rides great, a little slippage on the third cog though.

Beautiful lovely bike, don't change a thing, other than seat / stem height and stuff like that.
I wonder if the previous owner got the replacement decals from here, they sure look like it:

I had my Paramount repainted in the 1980's. After over ten years the brake housing clamps and water bottle holder straps were playing hell on the paint. I also took the opportunity to add water bottle bosses and guides which made life easier on the paint.
Schwinn no longer had decals available for 1970's bikes. I sent them a check for $20 and they sent the 1980's decals to the frame shop including the hard to get Reynolds 531 decal (not the respray decal). Schwinn never cashed the check. Maybe they could have avoided bankruptcy if they had only cashed that check.
