Got to work on a '77 Trek recently

TX something or other. Customer brought it in for a tune up. It was his father's and now he rides it. Mix of Campy and Sugino, including some drillium on the Maxy crankset and a fluted Sugino stem.

Cleaned some rust off the steel bits:

Given the 3 hole pattern on the lugs, this might be a TX 900. Mine has those cut outs. Very pretty bike btw.

jeirvine 09-20-17 09:21 AM

Right on. I think only the TX900 had the Cinelli lug treatment and fastback stays. That looks like my size, so your job is to point out that it is way too big for him...

And out of interest, what is the hex head size of the seatpost binder bolt? My '78 930 has a US sized bolt - maybe 3/16"

jpaschall 09-20-17 09:22 AM

YES. Would love to own one of these early Treks.

The Golden Boy 09-20-17 09:29 AM

I have a 78 Trek 730. It's a cool bike- but the TX bikes are something really special! I hope to be working on one soon!

TenGrainBread you're in Madison- is this the first TX bike you've had in your hands? I wonder how much more "common" these bikes are around here...

TX900 sounds right. Not sure of the binder bolt size. Bike is out the door already.

I've worked on a couple of TXs but this one was in great condition and especially cool to me. Madison is THE place to find old Treks...

The 3 hole lugs are kind of a give-away, but to be sure turn it over and look at the serial number, if it starts with a J, its a TX 900. I found mine in Oshkosh 2 weeks ago. Tim

1978 TX. Yes, the binder is surprisingly 3/16 and not metric.

Nice bike(s). I didn't realize Trek had the fast back seat stays that far back.

From Day 1, a very nice Dick Nolan design as all the original production was. :thumb:

"Got to work on a '77 Trek recently..." I thought it was going to be a bike commuter story. Still, very cool though.

I wish I was able to get ahold of my dads road bikes.

Looking good already with the cleanup.

I googled "Dick Nolan" as I didn't realize who he was. Seems like he vanished from what little I could find (what info I did find was mostly from the forums). I wonder if he had a hand in designing my 1979 910?

If you have a TX900 frameset like the three shown in this thread, then yes Dick Nolan designed it as well as all of the first generation Waterloo Treks.

I'd like to see more pics of that.

The Vintage Trek TX series are my favorite USA made Vintage Steel. I would take a 900 or 930 long before a paramount.

How about a TX700?

Very decent price. I managed to pick up 2 older Treks last year: a 1978 TX 900 and a 1979 510. The older Treks are just great bikes.

Ugh, me too. But, I just really enjoyed my commute on my 82 61x this morning so I'll try to focus on that instead. :)

The Golden Boy 09-21-17 07:37 AM

I've been looking for a TX700 (or the white whale TX770) and now I'm excitedly awaiting the arrival of a TX700. (Thanks to Mr Enabler! :D)

What I'm hoping for is the combination of the light 531 ride of my Trek 730 and the long wheelbase ride of the 720 and 620.

jeirvine 09-21-17 11:21 AM

For what it's worth, my 1978 930 is my favorite riding bike, in a stable that includes Masi, Colnago, and SBDU.

Flog00 09-21-17 02:18 PM

Those "enablers" should be called out and publicly shamed!

No chain hanger peg on there? Was that something that came along later?
