Miki Sakai ____? frame
Hello all! I just picked up a frame to build into a fixed gear and would like to know the brand/model, if possible. It's been spray bombed, but at least a couple of original decals were left: "Parker process Miki Sakai made in Japan" and "Champion no. 2 cromo butted tubing". There are no components to help. It came with a seatpost, but it dates '77, and the frame is a '83 by the serial no. Which is: M3D18988. I know that it could be just about any brand, but if any of you gurus can nail it, that would be great! I'm not going to be restoring it; that's why I got it in this condition...can't bring myself to turn a complete classic into a fixie!

It's probably a KHS. I know they sold several Miki produced bikes in the late 70s - early 80s, and all the one's I've seen photos of had that same Miki Sakai, Parker Process decal right above the bottom bracket. I found several pictures of early KHS Turbos that seem very close. They were 1981-82, and differed in having pressed binder ears on the seat lugs, and no diamond cutouts in the lugs. Otherwise, the lugs, Tange #2, and chromed fork crown were the same. I wasn't able to find any decent pictures of an 83 or 84. I know they also offered a Miki built touring frame, the "Gran Touring"?? "Gran Tour"??.
If not KHS, then Sekai, and Sekine both sold several models built by Miki, but maybe not as late as 83-84. Centurion also used Miki for several of their top models, but not after ~82, plus your frame doesn't match any Centurion models I've seen. The top Univega models were known for having diamond cutouts in the lugs, but I think they were all made by Miyata. (I haven't seen, or heard of any made by Miki) |
Good-looking frame. As it happens, I'm currently riding a Miki (originally a Union Sapporo) over the Tuscan hills, and I'm quite pleased with it. Especially the fast downhill bits are a treat.

Thanks for the info! It is a nice looking frame, though many wouldn't like what I'll be doing to it...shaving off the stops and doing a comic book decoupage. I'm more concerned about fit and performance, which this frame should deliver nicely. I'll look into those brands first, as I don't even know if it's meant for 27" or 700c's.

That's one sweet ride, non-fixie! If I was starting off with one like that, there's no way I could turn it into a fixed...at least not permanently by removing the stops and guides. My '86 Fuji Sagres is all original, and will continue to be as long as I own it :)

Actually, I started with a bare frame and fork in need of new paint, pretty much like you ...
