My Simplex Retro Friction can barely pull 6 speed in back without running out of lever room.

I'm running a set of Shimano 600 friction shifters on my 2x10 drivetrain (XT RD, 105 FD). Fine tuning the trim on a bumpy road can be a challenge. Other than that, it works fine.

Phil Wood debuted a 13-speed (yes, 13 gears just on the rear cassette) at InterBike a few days ago. Shifted with a Gevenalle friction shifter. Friction prevailed where no indexed system has gone before.

As everybody already mentioned - yes - but some levers do not have enough cable pull. I fabricated my own lever with larger barrel for Sram x9 1:1 pull ratio derailleur + shimano 8spd cassette. Simplex lever I used to have maxed out it's 180deg range with 7 gears on that derailleur.

I agree that it's sorta ridiculous, but there is a rationale. The cassette would be for use with a 1x (1 chainring) drivetrain. A common complaint with a 1x drivetrain is that you can get the same range as a double setup but you are sacrificing close spacing between the gear jumps, which some people like for dialing in their cadence. The more gears you have in the back, the closer you can make them to each other, which eliminates this weakness of 1x drivetrains.

Well YES. The ultimate configuration to the point where you don't need the lever at all! Smoothest action obtainable.

Friction shifters work well with derailleurs. Internally geared hubs, not so much. Fixies, not at all.

The adapter cube is pretty smart. I kinda wish they'd just leave it as a cube instead of machining it into something fancy for production

They say a Saint derailleur works better, but wanted XTR for the show.
I find this pretty funny. Maybe the Saint has some funky-fangled features that make it better for this application than an XTR, or maybe Grant Petersen is on to something about lower and mid-range derailleurs being the better deal. I've experimented with a number of 1x setups, and found that what I like best is 9 or 10 speeds, a simple ratcheting friction shifter, and a plain-jane long cage derailleur.
