Does anyone know this freewheel? If so what tool is needed to remove this?

Vintage_Cyclist 09-27-17 05:48 PM

Might be an Atom, Normandy or Maillard. What kind of bike did it come off? What's the hub?

JohnDThompson 09-27-17 06:09 PM

Can you get the axle nuts out of the way to see what's written on it?

It came off a peugeot sprint.

Vintage_Cyclist 09-27-17 06:29 PM

It says "Etanche" which is 'sealed' in French on one side.

Looks like the same type of freewheel as in this thread Questions on freewheel, wheels etc. - Bike Forums

Supposedly a Maillard.

As it says there the remover is no longer available so I suppose I gotta buy new wheels?
Or should I try this https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair...icle-section-1

Chombi1 09-27-17 06:46 PM

Don't see any notches, so looks like it comes off with a splined tool.
I do remember seeing splined tools at eBay for Maillard/Sachs FWs....

BikeEveryday 09-27-17 06:57 PM

okay thanks!

Looks like a 24 spline 31MM. Before I bought one I would take a wheel to the CO-OP and they would break it loose for me.

I'm sorry, but I don't get what you mean?

juvela 09-27-17 07:21 PM

IIRC this body seemed to launch by Maillard 1973-74. Also used as Schwinn Approved.

Normandy brand freewheel in your photo link requires the use of the largest splined remover in my photo in order to be taken off the hub.

It's a Normandy? I thought it was a malliard.

Edit: Sorry. Normandy is Malliard

"We break here to cover Maillard's product line in the classic era. Amalgamating several small houses into one of cycling's powerhouses of the era, Maillard made small-flange hubs under the M M Atom label, high flanged hubs marked "Normandy", track hubs in both series, a workhorse quick release skewer for both lines stamped "M M Atom", Atom freewheels of four five and six speeds both with splines and with two-notch bodies, large spline Maillard-Normandy freewheels, an Atom drum brake hub range for everything from Schwinn's Orange Crate to tandems and mopeds, and nice midprice pedals including big wide Atom 400s and the cute racy Atom 440s that graced the Raleigh Super Course. America was awakening to real bicycles and her appetite was enormous. Tens of millions of "ten speeds" landed here every year, many sporting that Maillard equipment which was the benchmark stuff in a crowded market. All that volume put Maillard in a position to develop new products for an industry long-sclerotic but now revitalized."

Or have you decided to skip the remover and get on to the removing?

It's a mailard and takes a fairly rare large 31mm Mailard freewheel tool. I would say take it to a bike coop or established older bike shop to see if they have a tool to take it off. These were only used on the early 80's competition freewheels and early hilicos which were only made for a couple of years and are now obsolete.

The tool may no longer be in current production, but it's likely a decent bike shop has one and could remove the freewheel for you for a couple bucks. Or you could buy the old tool on e.g. eBay or Amazon:

Pretty certain. If you don't want to risk buying the wrong tool, find a bike shop with the right tool. Toronto is a big metropolitan area, so I suspect there are at least a couple shops that have been around long enough to have the proper tool. Once you find it, you can look for the proper tool on line if you want to buy one.
