The big, yellow, Motobecane Submarine

Hello,

Some of you may have seen a few of my postings throughout the past few months. I wanted to make a thread to show the end of a process. You can see the beginning and before
pictures of the bike here
.

In the previous thread, I made the decision to outfit the 73 Mirage with campy and then swapped over some mafac brakes and levers, if only because they have a heck of a lot more character than the dia compe that were on the bike to begin with!

I wet sanded and used mother's on the brakes, levers, stem, and handlebars. I am pretty happy with how they came out. New Brooks saddle because everyone needs one, at least from spending time on this forum. Also had my LBS do a tune up, plus cables and housing. Plus a new freewheel.

Oh and I almost forgot. I washed the frame, used steel wool, and car polish (scratch x) to attempt to remove discoloration and dark staining. I can't say I was very successful, but I think it looks a heck of a lot better, then followed up with turtle wax. I'm still adjusting the fit but will probably get matching bar tape on tomorrow and update with a ride pic.

If you make it through the pictures, there's a bonus cat in there for ya! And a pic of the trek 610 frame I picked up for my next build.

Cheers.

That's a good looking job and a handsome cat. That 610 will be a lot of fun to fix up. I own a 1984 Trek 610.

Thanks much! This has been my first attempt at a "restoration" if you will. I'm looking forward to the trek. I think it's a 1981? I was shocked at how light it is when I picked it up-- I haven't run into too many Reynolds 531 frames myself!

Interesting. Don't think I've seen Nuovo Record on a high ten bike with steel wheels before but I do like the colour. Careful, one of your MAFAC brakes is missing a bolt.

Yes well, it's a "memory" bike as they say. I'm not selling it for the foreseeable future so I figured, why not make it a little easier to ride?

And good eye on the bolt, that must've happened at the bike shop. I'll have to call them and see if they can find it

Nice bike. My first 10 speed was a ’73 Mirage that my father bought me new. Deep metallic green with gold pinstripes. Mine came with dia-comp brakes, stem mounted shifters and a cottered crank. 10 speed first love.

Nice, but you are missing a bolt on the rear brake.

I’ve put Campagnolo equipment on my cheap old bikes frequently, particularly hubs, brakes levers, and front derailleurs. They work nicely for old French bikes.

Steel wool? Yikes! I had a yellow one with weird stains in the paint.Magic eraser and castro super-clean on a rag (rinse, repeat, polish) worked great.

I'll look into that! I used the 0000 grade stuff, pretty fine.

Here's a pic from today's ride... Threw a chain about 15 minutes after this. Got stuck between the freewheel and chain stay. I'm in an Uber right now.

That's a small adjustment on the rear derailleur. Hate when that happens.

I can get a pic up tonight. It's all galvanized steel--used a DIY guide online. I didn't want to buy a really expensive stand and was in a DIY phase. It works well enough and I enjoy the fact that it hangs things more or less at eye level, but it can "sway" a bit.
