Help identifying a bike -- Dodson

Two bikes actually. A matching pair of Dodsun (dodson?) 10 speed road bikes.

They are at a local thrift shop, flat tires, surface rust, and $30 apiece.

Don't recognize the brand but they look like very basic Asian production from the late '70s. They probably work well enough when tuned and it looks like entry level Suntour derailleurs and shifters that are functional but not fancy. If nothing's bent or broken they're worth the ask.

Thanks. I am going to pass (too many projects, too little space); if anyone in the Boston area is interested, PM me and I will pass along the location.

Dodsun was one of the few Taiwanese companies with an American presence during the early 1970's bicycle boom. They were established in 1972 and contract manufactured models for such brands as Concord, Cycle Pro, Nishiki, Norco, Sekai and Univega.

The subject bicycles are typical 1970s department store level models, with steel cottered cranksets, steel rims, steel handlebars, steel stems and steel hubs. In conjunction with a hi-tensile steel frame, these bicycles will likely be 30+ lbs. At least the brakesets are aluminum Dia-Compe. I can't identify the rear derailleurs but the front appear to be SunTour Spirt, so the rear are probably SunTour Honor.

These are very basic 10 speeds. I imagine the store will accept less. They should go down to at least $50 for the pair and hopefully less. However, I don't see much profit in a flip after you do the necessary maintenance. Regardless, if you do procure these bicycles, the Dodsun serial number format is well known and will provide the exact manufacturing date.

How does T-Mar do it? :) I had never even heard of Dodson until I read this thread. My helmet is off to you, once again.

.

Great information, and sent me down the rabbit hole, learning about those crank pins. I do remember my first adult-sized bike having those.

Thanks for the info!

The rear rim is heavily rusted. Unless youve got a spare rear wheel your time and replacement rim cost will outweigh the value of these bikes.
