John Howard Bicycle - David Tesch Build

Picked this up on Sunday. From my research on Dave Moulton's blog, this was probably built by David Tesch.

No serial number, which could be explained by the fact that it was one of his earliest JH frames he built. Beautiful condition. I'm tearing it down to build her back up again to as-new with Campy NR and SR.

Anyone else have a John Howard or David Tesch-built frame?

I bought a 101 frame from Dave in 1988. Built it up with C-Record. Sold it in 2003.

Had remorse, so when a NOS frame showed up a few years later, I grabbed it, but never got around to building it up. Sold it and a slightly damaged 753 Raleigh frame earlier this year to fund the purchase of a '72 Cinelli frame.

I also have an S-22 out in the garage that's waiting to be cleaned up.

Tom, that's a nice looking JH you have.

Nice. I have the John Howard later model made by KHS. Nowhere near the same caliber, but an interesting data point when looking at Howard Tri models.

I had a nameless Ti build for years, too big, and I rode it far longer than I should have ridden a frame that much too big. It was that nice. It came from the son of a pro who gave his frames to his son to sell while at NC State.

I searched a lot for clues to the builder, talked to Lynskey, Colorado Cyclery folks, and others. No luck. Finally, at NAHBS in Charlotte NC, I described it to Tesch's wife at their table/booth (he's now in NC). She listened, and was sure it was his build. He came by later and confirmed it.

I don't regret trading it for a Y-Foil frame; I regret not being tall enough to have ridden it right. As they say in a European clothing store: "these pants are not too small for you; rather, you are too big for them....."

Were I to be in a position to even consider another Ti frame, Tesch would be my choice, and I'd get the same frame, built to my size.

After years of riding, if I had the bucks; I'd go back to builders who seem to know what it's like to own and ride bikes that are not disposable, but an integral part of your cycling life:

Ti-Tesch
Steel-Eldridge
Carbon-Merckx

S-22: I would like mine to have a 126mm rear triangle, but there is no way I see that happening.

Don't think you can get the chainstays to cooperate?

At the bottom bracket the chainstays are 1.250" in diameter. Astounding.
There is a sizeable indentation for the inner chainring, as well as the stay being squished oval for tire clearance, 25mm may be too big, a 23 an under club member.
Just compressing by hand, well attempting to compress by hand the rear triangle... It is the strongest I have encountered in a steel frame. The bike is made with Truetemper tubing, but no description if it is heat treated.
I will live with an Ultra 6. It is a monster. Neon Pink.

Agreed. I think it has the best finish of all my frames.

He knew exactly what he was doing and made sure it showed. He came to PDX a couple of years ago on a meet and greet tour, great guy, very much enjoyed listening to what he had to say. He's on my short list.
