Thanks! She'll look even better when she's finished. I want to get the black off the crank arms & ring, but I'm afraid the only way is with sandpaper and elbow grease. Yuck. Same with the seat post. Still have to find a nice mirror and head light, and think about installing the grey/sliver Planet Bike plastic fenders I impulsively bought. Take those stickers off (not sure how), clean up the rust, and clean and polish the frame.

Blurg. That is a pain, I'm sure you'll knock it out - good luck! I did happen to see a thread in the single speed & fixed gear sub where someone removed anodized finish with oven cleaner...

Switched out the stem for a new nitto. And found an old seat post in the junk pile to raise up the seat a bit more. Pretty fun little bike.

What's the BCD of your rings and your preferred crank length? Assuming you aren't running a 10s cassette, I might have a crankset in silver that I could send you. Playing with oven cleaner and harsh abrasives for the sake of vanity is not worth it.

I have no intention to ever use oven cleaner on anything, not even an oven. Thank you so much for your offer, but I would rather learn how to strip it, for future projects.

It's a 1989 (I think) Nishiki Cascade in 21" size. I bought it in mostly original condition for $100 to use as my gym/errand bike, but never warmed up to it in stock form.
Now it has a Dimension cruiser bar, Nitto MT10 stem, and Schwalbe Big Bens. It's super comfortable for city riding. I'm thrilled with it.

The rack is a Racktime Addit.
Mounting it was a little weird because the seat stays are a wishbone monostay. The rear v-brake and rack struts were a tight fit but everything worked out in the end.

The rack held up great. It was cumbersome when I had to stand to climb an extended hill, but as long as I did not throw the bike sideways I was fine. The wood dividers rattled a lot and I am going to have to figure out a bungie system to hold it still.

I swapped out my porteur wine box for a Wald basket to see which I like better. The wood box acted like an acoustic amplifier for the road noise! The rack is more aerodynamic, lighter and my wife says looks nicer. But now I need to get a bag to carry stuff in the rack.
