Welp, just pulled the trigger on a new Ultegra R8000 group. So I guess that decision is made. Will add pictures when I receive it.

I have a spare set of 23 Masters waiting to be mounted on the Tommasini in the spring (my third set lol). I also have a brand new set of 28 G+ that I’m not certain will clear the chain stays on this frame. The 25 Corsa on the wheels now have seen better days but have a little life.

I’m mostly interested to see what black tires would look like when it’s done. I have nothing with black tires. This will also be my only non-Campagnolo bike...

After getting back into mtbs, I jumped back into the Shimano fold.

I have a full XT build on my SB5 and it's fantastic.

If I end up with a SB5+, I'll likely go full XTR.

As for an all road bike down the road, I will definitely consider a full Shimano build.

I think both tanwalls and black sidewalls look good with a black component build on a vintage bike. Black sidewalls look a little more racer and complete the murdered out look, while tan sidewalls give a nod to the vintage nature of the frame. Depends on what you are going for. If it was silver components, then tan all the way. Tire size might influence this too since I think larger tires (28c and up, though sounds like it might not be an option on this bike) look better with tan sidewalls and smaller tires can go either way.

I agree with Tricky there, I really dig the tan sidewalls. Makes it look more professional, in a way.
This is going to be an incredible build, either way. Going with an Ultegra crankset? I haven’t seen too many vintage builds with White Ind. cranks, but they seem pretty neat.

As of now, yes, going with the Ultegra crankset. A little concerned with the bulk and it visually overpowering everything else but we’ll see how it goes. Haven’t seen the group on too many steel bikes so it’s hard to get a great feel for how it will look.

I know the VBC crankset looks great on steel bikes but it’s a pretty significant added expense.

Had a few challenges with Ribble after great experiences in all prior transactions so it's been a bit delayed. Originally was going to build this one myself but [MENTION=286310]Chrome Molly[/MENTION] agreed to take the build on. Build will be the below:

Group: Shimano Ultegra 8000
Wheelset: Lamere rims laced to HED hubs
Stem: Nitto Pearl black
Handlebar: Soma Hwy One black
Seatpost: Nitto S65 black
Saddle: Fabric Scoop Shallow Carbon

I can't imagine a lamer wheel set for that bike ;)

But seriously, those things are seriously, blackly bulky. If I started with them, I'd be tempted to go all-blackout on every other component, too. Should be a cool look for such an eye-popping frame. I guess when you start with such a color scheme, the usual C&V rules don't apply.

Only issue, almost sure it's a 27.0 seat post. Haven't taken the Nitto post out of the box, since my 27.2 posts won't fit.

As for the seat post size, I would think that all Serottas would be 27.2 as they are high end frames, and that is my outside looking in viewpoint/lack of thorough knowledge. Couple that with some seat posts varying slightly in 27.2mm diameter, to say nothing of the cluster being a little tighter than normal. What seat post was in there before? Would gently prying it open + a good bit of grease help, you think? I will certainly understand the trepidation on doing that with a brand new seat post, as I would be. As I buy used frames and components mainly (in nice shape, mind you!), I am more at ease in experimenting this way.

Taking a longer look at the seat tube this morning, it's likely a 27.2. The side to side measure is 26.82 but front to back is 27.35. The cutout slot at the top of the seat tube is tapering slightly smaller toward the top. This may call for some gentle persuasion with a one inch hardwood dowel. I don't want to scratch that lovely paint job.

Not often my wife comments on the bikes in the lab, but she gave up an audible "wow" when passing by with the day's laundry...

With the right bar tape (bright green to match the "serotta" graphics) this bike is gonna look super-hot.

(And I generally don't like black-out builds.)

Ya, I can fiddle with the seat post/tube when I get it back. That way it will be on me for any issues. Ha

I'm going with just black bar tape. The paint on this frame is incredibly striking and I'm doing my best to avoid anything that plays against it.
