Veterans Day ride in DC
So some of you know that every Veterans Day when I'm assigned to DC I ride into town and snap a few photos. This year I upped the ante and brought my good camera, as I bought a system for convenient and quickly deployable carry on a bike or hiking (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...=Y&sku=1140949) This thing works great and I highly recommend it.
Admittedly this is not C&V, except that the memorials are certainly C&V! I bought a C'Dale Slate this year and it has become as close to the one-bike solution as I have ever managed. It seems to be my go-to bike now for the vast majority of my rides, and going into DC on a crowd day when one needs to hop curbs and cut across grass and such made it the perfect solution. It was a frosty 28 degrees as I headed out, I didn't expect to need to dig out the lobster gloves so early but they certainly were the ticket today. My first stop was the tiny Great War Memorial in Cherrydale Va on my way into DC:

I didn't make many stops between there and the National Mall, as it was pretty nippy and removing the gloves to take pics was a commitment.

Despite the frigid air there were a lot of people on the Mall. Right off I saw this group of runners touring the memorials:

Then I proceeded to loop the memorials starting with the Korean War:

I next visited one of my favorite spots in DC. As a WWI amateur historian I really like the District Great War Cupola:

Next I rode to the privately funded 2nd Div WWI Memorial:

Which is basically on the White House front lawn (extreme front that is). I always head up to the 1st Div World War One memorial after that, but it was closed for preparations for a ceremony later, this was as close as I could get. This is right next to the WH grounds so is often, disappointingly, closed off to the public:

I headed back to the Mall:

And stopped at the jam-packed Vietnam Memorial. I have many pics of the wall itself so I didn't try to squeeze my way in with a bike along:

I snapped a few from in front of the Lincoln:

And then hurried back up the hill to Arlington for a hot bagel and coffee before another planned stop; the local VFW 3150 (proud member) out on a very nice, small commemoration at the Clarendon War Memorial:

This intimate setting in the middle of two busy streets was a nice contrast to the huge, grand events downtown. Huge thanks to VFW Post 3150 for organizing this event.

My final stop was the private Korean War fountain at Randolph Towers in Ballston. I don't know the story of why this is here (recent addition) but maybe the owner of the buildings is a vet, or had a relative in the conflict. Either way, it's one of the neat things one stumbles across in the DC region:

So that was my morning here in our National Capitol. I don't often ride into DC; too busy, too many runners/cyclists/elite pathletes for my taste, but days like this remind me how lucky I am to live here for the time being. And, to all those who served, thank you. Your sacrifices are not forgotten.
Note: My fellow jarheads may lament my omission of the Iwo statue; it is under renovation and covered in scaffolding. If anyone wants to view the full album it is here:

Nice to see you got out for your annual tour of respect. Nice weather, too. Piuring rain here!
Great pics! I am planning on a short vaca next summer and my escort will be taking me around to see much of what you photographed in addition to the Smithsonian and the typical DC monuments.
Happy Vereran's Day to all who seved!

Thanks Jeff, if I'm still here I'd love to link up for a frosty adult beverage. I'd be happy to lend you a steed too, I have about 13 to choose from here. We're close enough in size it would work.

Thanks, it was a great day. As for the bike...I have to admit I'm riding my C&V stuff less and less. The Slate is so damn comfortable (running 42s on it now) and versatile that I really have to have a reason to ride something else nowadays. Also I do almost all my longer rides on the Potomac towpath, which is unpaved and perfect for this bike. The local paved path, the W&OD, has become so packed with users on nice days that it's more work than it's worth to thread through everyone. The worst are the other cyclists of the "super serious" brand. So, I've gone off-pavement and the Slate fits the bill. Topic for another post I guess, but it may not be too well-received here.

The lure is fewer autos to contend with and that's a huge plus.
I've been hanging out on mtb forums and of course, Riding Gravel.
I ride my Yeti constantly here in the Twin Cities. Tons of trails to enjoy.
Again, your Slate is a cool bike though. A local shop has them in stock.
I wonder if they would rent one for a day so I could try it out.

Great set of photos -- thank you for this VERY timely thread!
"Quite a few of us are riding off road much more often and ride mainly modern gear." -- Some of us ride off road on classic (defined here as more than 25 years old) gear.
Mine is appropriately colored for patriotic holidays.

Thanks for the tour. I have good memories of visiting DC when I was in flight training at Pax River. Went to the Capitol building and was just walking around inside under the dome, looking at the portraits, saw a few recognizable congressmen walking by. Weird, because there was virtually no security present in those days. One of the staff asked me if I'd like to go inside and see the Senate in session. Sat down and watched Spiro Agnew sitting in as President of the Senate and Ted Kennedy on the floor, speaking. Nice memories.
Nice to see your pics of the Second Division memorial. My dad retired from 2ndDiv in '63 out of Camp Lejeune.

If I'd have known, I'd have taken Amtrak to meet you, stayed in Old Town and ridden the path there. I have plenty of time off coming up....

I was privileged enough to be asked to chaperone some of the WWII MOH recipients to the dedication of their memorial. They were the nicest, most humble men I've ever been around, and very much moved by their thoughts that day. Some of them had their wives with them. I could write a book with what their wives told me. They knew that the men they'd married saved the free world, but they did not know what these men had to do to make that happen. They had an idea, but didn't want details.

Thank you for the great photos!
Even though I have always lived within 20-30-ish minutes of DC I still haven't seen most of this (in person), yet.

You're a lucky guy Robbie, that's one helluva privilege. Yeah, I thought about posting something but the weather was so fungible last week I doubted anyone would be interested. As it turned out it was nice and cold, perfect riding weather for late fall. At this point we're probably past the "organized ride" season with the crazy holidays looming. I'm maximizing my available time after spending a summer healing a broken foot, I didn't ride or run from May to Sept. Making up for lost time is the order of the day for me.
