Atala Series Number???

Just picked up a Atala serial number S727045.

Wondering if there is a data base with more information re: year and model.

Pictures later...

Thanks.

Given the way Rizzato usually did things the 72 would be a date. Cannot recall encountering the letter S previously. Most common is the letter A. The forum has had some examples marked with other letters in the past.

You might find something here that could be useful. These are before and after posts on my 1972 Atala.

In my experience, Atala (and Lygie) frames of that era are stamped YYXNNNN, where YY is the last two digits of the year, X is a letter (most often "A"), and NNNN is a four digit number of meaning unknown to me. Might be a simple sequence number, but perhaps it narrows down the build date a bit.

Here's my 1970 Super Pro and a 1950s Atala whose serial number seems to pre-date this scheme, having just a letter and four digit number, no year (though perhaps it's tucked away elsewhere on the frame).

To the best of my knowledge, the Rizzato forma tof this era incorporates the date but not any model codes. The subject bicycle is from 1972 and during the early 1970s, the Atala product line was fairly stable. It should be relatively easy to establish the model from a good set of pictures.

Thank you for the information. Here are a few pictures that might help.

I think I found it in the 1971 Atala catalog online. Given the specs in the catalog I believe it might be a Grand Prix. I need to see if I can see any remnants of the decal. Thanks for the help and the additional information and for sharing the pictures of your amazing bikes. That 1950s bike is REALLY cool.

I can not say but I just bought a Atala with a serial number starting with R72 which I assume is a 1972. But other reply’s to your past indicate that the letter should come after the year. So we both seem to have strange ones with the R and S in the wrong place.
