I think it took a while for other colors to be good, durable paint. The Ford Model T came in black only. Raleigh black paint long ago was excellent paint.

Part of my collection of (mostly) black bikes. '74 Raleigh Competition, '72 Motobecane Grand Record, '73 Motobecane Le Champion (before I started on my Frankenbike build up … no pics yet).

1992 Bianchi Project 3 that I picked up earlier this year. Currently has 29x2.0 Specialized Fast Track tires, but there is no extra clearance in back if the wheel is not perfectly true.

Out twice last weekend.
Over 40 degrees both days and we even downhill skied in the afternoons.
Old pic, but you get the idea.

Only black bike I've photographed is a bit ho-hum - '89 Trek 800 Antelope. $25 on CL, had a 135-mm rear wheel with a 7-speed freewheel swapped in. Now has a wheelset with a 130-mm 6-speed rear from a late-'80s Nishiki Expedition that was free on CL. Shifting is bang-on. Swapped the saddle / post, rack is from the thrift shop ($5).

Oh wait - found one of the Rockadile. About a 1990. Rescued from the trash. All it really needed, besides the usual tune-up, was a set of tires. Fork needed some clean-up, but works. Wife re-wrapped the bar. Bike fits her perfectly.

93 Cannondale / Surly Fork

Stripped the frame and polished to about 600 grit.
Powdered with a clear smoke.
Then started pulling parts out of bins.
Let me know if it doesn’t count as black!

My '72 Lambert Grand Prix about 5 or six years ago:

And as of a couple years ago:

Nothing is left of the original bike except the frame and maybe the headset. Paint was done a few months before pic 1 was taken. Even the Lambert crank in pic 2 is from a different bike

This CrossHairs is small for me, but I'm really enjoying it anyway. I'll get a steeper stem for it now, maybe a Cambian seat, then maybe a larger version of the same late next year, hopefully.

Thanks. Yes, I used champagne corks for bar plugs. I have a build thread here in BF C&V under "Peugeot Path Racer." You can see all the parts I used on this budget build.

Well... I meant to post snapshots of my brand new Soma Smoothie in December. I decided to build this bike as a replacement for my much loved Bridgestone RB-1. In November, a motorist darted into my path - a well marked bike lane -and now the RB-1 has a bent top tube! That's beyond my repair skills, so I looked for a couple of my "grail bikes" (e.g. 62cm MX Leader). But being grail bikes, they're extremely scarce. The Smoothie came together quickly. I put a couple hundred miles on it in December, but various things delayed me posting pics here, including a late decision to switch over stem and seatpost from black Ritchey parts to silver Soma bits.

I'm late, my black Chicago Schwinn Cruiser project is coming this month.

If you dig black trim, I'm shooting for this in February...

And the light is converted to LED!
