Odd fitting...

-----

Have been wondering about this for over two years and thought to make a post of it. :foo:

Photo is of the underside of the bottom bracket of a 1940's era Terrot one-speed machine with 650B wheels.

Have a a gander at the area outboard of the adjustable bottom bracket cup/ lockring and inboard of the left hand crank arm.

There is a sleeve/bushing there over the axle which appears to be secured by a set screw.

Do you know its purpose?

Cycle was discussed in this forum thread:

To confuse people in the 21st Century?

Nondrive crank/chainstay clearance?

Wider Q?

"Even" Q between drive and nobdrive sides?

Why "cover" the spindle? I haven't a clue.

Reminds me of this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pair-of-NOS...0AAOSw44BYKSQe Torker is a popular old school BMX co that hand built in CA beginning 77' or so through about 84', then sold the name.

What is the purpose of this Torker fitting?

Prevent items from wrapping around bottom bracket axle - analogous of skirt guard?

@juvela it was a sealed bearing BB and the collar tightens down to hold shaft from moving side to side. I am not sure how effective it was but it was their own thing. They were known for a double top tube BMX frame. Made the F/F, BB, and 6 bolt stems. I believe some bars as well. And were known for making the first Haro frames for Bob Haro that also rode one of their bikes and made some deals with them. All very collectible stuff.

Those are the outboard retention fittings for the BMX Torker BB which was designed to convert an Ashtabula BB shell to accommodate a three piece alloy crank-set, often by Sugino in several snazzy colors. It was "Trick". ;)
