Finally found a Gan Lemond! -Pic Heavy

I've been trying to land one of these for quite awhile now. For me a Lemond made by the Billato Brothers of wonderful Excell steel is a triple win. Then add in the fact that this is the team Greg was riding for in his last Tour De France and it's even more desirable in my book. One finally popped up on the Steel Is Real facebook page but someone appeared to beat me to it. Fortunately I guess I was the serious buyer and I landed this one.

It's setup with pretty much all Campagnolo parts including the Racing T groupset. I finally gave it a decent cleaning today, polished the paint, and then a little wax. Steel needs more work though as the pics revealed more grime I missed. All and all not a bad looking bike and seems to have held up pretty well over the years.

Excell GLX which I understand is the same as the Podium steel my one Giordana is made of:

Aero seatpost looking good after a quick polish

Campagnolo hubs but I don't know which ones

Unique head tube decal, different than used on my other Billato built Lemonds or the Trek ones.

First time running into one of these saddles.

Stem also polished nicely

Best I can tell, all these Gan Lemonds had the number hanger.

Great looking bike! I think your front derailleur cable might be better off if it went through the hole in the chain stay bridge

Caught me!

The cable is actually the only problem I found with the bike. It's frayed where it connects to the FD and I'm going to replace it. I just threw it on real quick to grab the pictures.

Gorgeous, I like everything about this bike.

What's going on with that saddle, does it have some kind of internal springs?

It's like a bushing setup that keeps the rails suspended from the saddle body. The rails in the front are suspended too. I'm curious how it'll feel on the rough chipseal roads I ride and if it'll last.

Damn, son! According to the rear brake bridge it's certified "handmade." And that ain't the least of it.

I have a couple of those. The round "Pirelli" buttons on the back cover saddle rail elastomers, similar to what Sella Italia Turbomatics do. I tried that saddle but gravitated back to various iterations of the Turbomatic. Kind of like the difference between a Fizik Aliante and Arione.

Very nice. I have a couple of Lemonds myself and enjoy riding the Alpe d'Huez. I'm sure I'll enjoy the Zurich once it's actually built. Can't get ahead of myself too much, you know.

Very nice ride, I have several Lemond catalogs and I have the 1994 catalog with a photo of the Team Gan bicycle in it. The photo in the brochure is blue/yellow fade different from the actual team model like you have. The sizes are listed in even sizes which is different considering most of my other Lemond catalogs the frames are listed in odd sizes. This bike should have a Italian threaded bottom bracket according to description. Enjoy the ride.

Which “steel is real” page did you find it on, looks like there are three or four different groups with that name.

Yep, always hard to pin these old Lemonds down to poor documentation. I believe what you are seeing is the GL model, blue on back fading to a yellow front? Then you have these GLXs like I got. To make it even more difficult you have regular Lemond GLX's that look basically the same as mine yet don't have the small Gan decals or the number hangers.

And then there was a limited edition set of 100 of these these that had a decal on the seat tube listing what number frame it was and with Greg's signature. It's best bet by me that it's a 1994. I could probably send Billato the serial number off the BB and they share what info they have.

Anyway, you could scan and share that 1994 catalog? This is my 3rd Billato built Lemond and I can't find any catalogs on any of them. I also have an 89 Ventoux and an early 90s Maillot Jaune.

Score, I used to have a Billato built Malliot Jaune in Team Z livery that was a sublime ride, I expect this will ride much the same. Beautiful unicrown fork too!

Do you know if anyone on this forum owns one of the rare Lemond V2 Boomerang's ? Pretty interesting catalog from 94. According to the brochure, Greg teamed up with Mitsubishi Rayon to make his V2 carbon bikes. They look almost identical to Calfee's gusset design. I talked to Craig Calfee years ago and asked him about this. He told me Lemond had to cease making them because of patent infringements. Also included in the line up for 94 is the titanium frames made by Kent.

Thanks and very interesting! When you find pics of these on line the blue appears much darker and the fade is a little different. I wonder if changes were made in production?

This looks like mine but without the Gan decals or number holder:

https://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/dow...?id=211879&t=1

Then you have the 1993 Team Gan Lemonds that look closer to your catalog but richer in color and with the old decal package.

I don't, I've only seen pics of those. Last week one of the Ti bikes was on ebay.

I've also seen a Saturn team colored Trek era Lemond up for sale as well as a Mercury one.

I believe as stated before, the ones with the number plate under the top tube were indeed limited to 100 piece production run. I have seen several of the on eBay over the years with owners stating in their description about 100 made.

I wish I could confirm this. I chased after one several months ago. But it did have an edition decal on it with an actual signature and a certificate verifying. This one has neither.

No matter what, it's a beautiful bike. My other Excell tubed bike (Giordana XL Super) is the favorite of all my rides just for how connected I feel to it when I have it out on the road.
