What and/or how many...
...times have you purchased something that you HAD TO have, but had no real need for?
Example, I just purchased a crank set that I:
A.) had never heard of before.
B.) don’t have a bike that needs a crankset.
C.) prefer compact gearing.
D.) absolutely fell in love with it.
E.) can’t wait for it to get here.
So? What have you done?

The Capo Sieger -- my second current Capo, the third I have owned. (The first met an untimely demise.) I have yet to finish restoring it, and I have four other bikes in full working order, but it is a rare and high-quality bird, and I have a "thing" for the marque.

I have a number of components that I don't need but bought because they were a good price and I might need them in the future.
I keep changing my mind on what I want to put on a project frame. I haven't worked on the projects but keep changing my mind! Takes less time to buy parts than paint a frame!

Does the crank look anything like this?
I'm sorely tempted by that one myself...

I also had to spend several minutes talking myself down on that one!

A three-speed Condor ladies' bike made in Switzerland. Too small for me and my wife does not ride the bikes she has, including a nice little Raleigh Sports. I just love the looks and the quaint Continental flourishes, and I rationalized the purchase by telling myself that the alloy 700C Sturmey wheelset (with DT spokes!) came cheaper than it would have cost me to build some up for a Raleigh Pro 3-speed project that I have in mind but will probably never get to.

I have a Sampson crankset that I purchased it 1994 along with the bottom bracket with the titanium spindle. It is installed on my Mark Zeh, is still ridden with no problems.

Tires and cranksets. I have been removing economy tires in the 28 to 32mm wide range from my bikes. Most of these tires were not fully worn but they were not performing sufficiently well and I wanted to reduce the use of black wall tires on C&V bikes.
I've installed tanwall 700x28 Vittoria Corsa G tires on my Paramount and PX10. I'm using brown wall Panaracer Gravelking slicks on my Motobecane Grand Record and Compass Stampede Pass on my Simoncini Cyclocross Special. My blue and white, with green trim Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra got a set of green stripe Vittoria Pave tires a year ago. A set of 700x25 Vittoria Corsa tanwall tires are on the De Rosa.
I replaced the stock TA Professional crankset on the Motobecane with a NOS TA Cyclotourist, this allows the use of 48 & 34 chainrings.

Many years ago I bought a late 80's NOS Shimano bottom bracket at The Big Auction Site only to discover when it arrived that it was Italian threading.
I had no Italian BB bikes at the time.
So I built a new bike around that BB.

I don't usually buy things just because I like them, I must justify them... but my last acquisition (non cycling related) is a Victorinox Soldier 08 I don't really need.

I bought a velo Orange wire bottle cage for about 7x more than I was going to buy a generic one for. Finally installed it and promptly ran over it day 1.

That is a gorgeous crank. As soon as I saw it I had the exact same thoughts/questions that you did. Glad you found that stashed Benjamin before I did!

Boy where do I start.
I just bought an 8 speed Record Ergo groupset with wheels because it was a good price. And I already have one set in reserve.
Like BarrettsCV I am also trying to put high end tires on all my bikes, so pick them up whenever I find a good price.
Like rccardr I somehow picked up 8 speed Campy downtube shifters and eventually built up my first Campy 8 speed group set around those.

Parts I don't need? Let me see... I have three tall filing cabinets full of parts, three big plastic bins of parts and probably 50 wheels and probably the same number of tires. Not to mention probably two dozen bikes on the premises.
Do I need all of it? NOPE!

Bought a set if these about 5 years ago from someone here.
Unlike the good Dr., I haven't managed to build a bike around them.

Pretty much anything Campagnolo NR or SR, between 71 and 86, along with Victory/Triomphe calipers. If its within available funds, I'm interested--------- unless SWMBO says NO!

Ah, most of the frames, which ended up as complete bikes. Cyclone derailleurs, though backups are always good to have. Sew-up rims. I'm sitting on a Sugino RT triple crank that I can't see ever using. Likewise a Cyclone MII RD, small cage. Somebody will use this stuff eventually, I'm sure.

This thread pretty well describes my basement. I go through periods where it’s just too hard to pass up a good deal, particularly with Reynolds 531 built frames or NOS Brooks saddles. I keep the latter in their original boxes stashed on a shelf in a dark corner, so I’m not even sure what’s there!
