Mystery Peugeot

I need a little help identifying this Peugeot that came into the Bike Exchange last week.
It looks to be from the 70’s
5 speed freewheel, Looks French but I didn’t inspect
Mafac competition brakes , and levers
Simplex forged dropouts,
large flange Peugeot Trophe by Malliard hubs on Super Champion “gentleman” rims, probably 700 c although the tires and rims are not marked ,
Presta tubes.
Simplex 610? Rear derailleur
Suntour Vx front derailleur and down tube shifters
No name 52-42 chain rings
Front fork stamped Reynolds 531
Guidon Felipe Franco/ italia bars
Plate on bottom bracket stamped 7014693
Weight all up as shown 23.3 lbs

First guess was a PX10 but not sure.

Sure looks like a PX10. Late 70's..

Check center of hubs, rims near valve, RD on pulley cage and ends of handlebar for possible date codes.

Chrome socks, both ends usually = PX10.
Swaged crankset is a cheap replacement though that might have come from something like an early 80's PH10.

For resale purposes would it be any advantage to replace the Suntour 7 ( sorry not vx as earlier stated) front derailleur and down tube shifters with Simplex. I have a high end simplex front derailleur and can find some Simplex down tube shifters. Might be able to put a stronglight crank on it as well. Have to check at the bike exchange to see if they have one hanging on the wall.

we are getting quite a stable of vintage race bikes in the container at the bike Exchange including a Raleigh Professional, a Gitane Tour de France, plus this Peugeot, a couple Raleigh Super Course's, and a blue Flandria.

I think you'd be on the right track to go with a Simplex FD and shifters, hopefully ones that match the RD, and yes, if you have a Stronglight crankset, it would be a bonus. I'd also ditch the rear wheel's spoke protector, it's not fitting for a racing bike.

Plate on bottom bracket stamped 7014693
. . .
From the serial number: the frame was manufactured in "7"=1977, "01" = January.

Rear derailleur appears identical to the SX410 on my 1979 PKN10 which also had a "07 79" date stamped on the spindle of Bottom Bracket, so check there for a date when doing the overhaul. Brochures show 77 PX10 had a Stronglight 99 crankset, PRN10 had the Stronglight 49D.

Not so clear cut on a Peugeot. The stamped serial number on my '79 UO-10M is Y912xxxxx, and the stamped number on my '81 PXN-10E is B102xxxx.

If the paper tag (with yet another serial number!) is intact you can see what the model number (and frame size) is, but graphics and component date codes will be a more accurate way to ascertain the year.

Does not apply to plate stamped serial numbers.

Format must be stamped directly into the metal. First character is a letter followed by 3 numbers, a space, then more numbers. Nobody knows what the 'letter' signifies but some speculate its factory code.

Not quite correct, the year and month decoding does not apply to all plate stamped serial numbers.

Some of the plate stamped serial numbers have the year and month encoded in them.

All of the plate stamped serial numbers that I have seen with 7 digits and that begin with '6', '7', or '8' have year and month information.

All of the plate stamped serial numbers that I have seen with 7 digits and that begin with '0', '1', or '2' do not have year and month information.

You are correct. Peugeot used several locations for their frame numbers and serial numbers. Peugeot also used more than one format for serial numbers.

In the OPs case it is a plate stamped frame number, that begins with the digit 7.
