70s Cinelli
Hello, I recently found a Cinelli SC in my size. I think it's a 1973 or '74. I have been looking for a long time. I cleaned it up, and sourced the missing parts in the last month or so. I had The Bicycle Stand in Long Beach overhaul everything including rebuild the headset and bottom bracket. They did a great job! I just wanted to share the photos, because I know a lot of folks here have a similar appreciation.
Here are the photos on Flickr. https://www.flickr.com/photos/151336143@N04/ |
Very nice, I would be on the lookout for a 2 bolt seatpost to go with the Unicanitor. ;)
|
Thanks Merziac! I have the original 2 bolt seatpost, but unfortunately, it's too short for me to use.
|
Looks good. The seatpost is a good choice as the two bolt unit will not be long enough.
The seatpost binder bolt is the type from the 60's. I would be on the lookout for a Record big ring to Super Record small ring. I have one in silver as well, I would not thought of that color bar tape but it works... I use red. Need a Cinelli Only ride. |
Well that's not gorgeous or anything, is it?
A '60s/'70s Cinelli is pretty much my entire "One Day You Shall be Mine" list. Yours is another example of why. Very nicely done. :) |
What a beauty!

Gorgeous bike! Well done.
I’m not sure if the older SC’s can use the same seat clamp bolt as the newer ones, but Cinelli has them for a not completely unreasonable price. https://www.wingedstore.com/spare-pa...trssc-575.html |
Had to log in to comment on this fine bike. Fantastic, C-dale65. Looks to be in outstanding condition.
Congratulations. |
Clean bike and nicely put together. I don't recall seeing that stamp on the brake release, very cool. Congrats!

Very, very nice. FWIW, I think your estimate of 1973-74 is pretty good, based on the Velo Retro Cinelli timeline.
I agree that your choice of seatpost is appropriate. No way a Campy two-bolt will be long enough. I also doubt that a Nitto two-bolt (S-83? S-84?) would be long enough, although it would be closer. For your purposes, what you have is pretty much the best available option that I can think of. |
Gorgeous and I am not a fan of silver frames! I do like the contrast with chrome!
How much of a drop is that from the seat to the HB? I ride with about 2.5 inches, which is about my limit without my knees hitting my belly! I can't see how to ride that one. |
Beautiful bike!
I can't be the only one wondering about your setup, so I'll ask the question: why so much post showing? There's quite a saddle to stem drop there; do you normally ride a larger frame? Can't remember the last time I saw such a nice original paint job on a 70s Cinelli. You certainly bagged a keeper :) DD |
Thanks for all the nice comments! They are very much appreciated.
Yes, my set up is not normal. I have long legs and a short torso, so I need a shorter top tube usually with a lot of seatpost showing. On all my bikes, the measurement from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat is 83-85 cm, depending on the bike. I was very lucky to find the frame in such nice condition and the seller was willing to ship. I originally didn't think the deal would come together, but the seller was great, and shipped it via bikeflights with no damage. |
That's a classic, for sure. I find many Italian bikes to be gaudy, but not the Cinelli!
|
Oh man, that Cinelli makes my liver quiver, beautiful bike all around.

Yours looks virtually identical to mine. However, it looks like you don't have the brazed on water bottle mount on the down tube whereas mine does. I believe this change occurred in 1974, so yours is most likely a 1973.

Davester,
Thanks for the information on the water bottle bosses! That's good to know when trying to date these Cinellis. Yes, I don't have the mounts, and still need to mount the water bottle holder(still in box). I was leaning more toward 1973 due to the date on the rear derailleur, which I am assuming is original to the bike, but I wasn't 100% sure. |
I remember those well from when they were new and I was a starving grad student riding a Nishiki. :) Very nice!
