Grail Brakes.

To the north there lies a cave-- the cave of Caerbannog-- wherein, carved in mystic runes upon the very living rock, the last words of Olfin Bedwere of Rheged...

...make plain the last resting place of the most Holy Grail. Brakes.

Follow! But! Follow only if ye be men of valour, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived! Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

I'm going to keep riding this "grail" thing.

Worthy.

I am still looking for a bike's worth of DC NGC982 cantis. Silver preferred. Don't need NOS.

I'd be happy to include my 987s for them in partial trade.

Those are next.

Or the Compass Herse cantis... Those are sexy.

Compared to the real ones...

I'd already decided the next bike is getting the M732s in the front and the M900s in the back... then the Herse cantis came out... ooohhh....

There's a pair of first generation (ca 1960) Weinmann Vainqueur 999 De Luxe calipers, anodized blue, on eBay now. Complete with first generation cable straddles.

If those aren't grail brakes, I don't know what is.

Of course, there remains the issue of whether you want to actually stop or not.

Man, that’s a drag.

I guess it would be preferable to battle the foul creature (bunny rabbit) of Caerbannog.

This was supposed grailly lighthearted sharing of what I consider some of the coolest brakes in the universe and the encouragement of others to do the same.

Well you knew in a thread like this a C-Record delta would make it's appearance...Impractical, a pain in the rear to set up, but beautiful and performs
well in my experience. So far anyway...

Campagnolo Record sidepull brakes. They seem to have a lot of detractors these days. I would argue that they were head and shoulders above anything else made with regard to quality when they came out. If used with actual Campagnolo pads, they had excellent fine control and modulation. They allowed you to go down a windy fast descent, 6 inches from the wheel in front of you, really really fast. That is what racing brakes are for.

Would that be like someone complaining about the handling and top speed of the 67 Corvette compared to a Camry?

Herse cantis

The forged Herse cantis and Compass replicas are beautiful, although I have a soft spot for the first version, early 40s Speedy brakes. They were essentially hand made, very light weight, smooth and powerful.

Record Deltas do look a bit prettier and are lighter but I prefer the Croce d'Aune version since they have room for larger tires.

I've got a set of the hidden spring Superbe Pros- but I'm missing the cable clamp on one. Besides that, I don't have much of any bikes that'll take short reach brakes!

I have to laugh at either the term "grail" or NR brakes being grail. If NR brakes are grail, let me steer clear of grail. When I raced, mid '70s, the heyday of those NR brakes, my DiaCompe Gran Compes were far better brakes. I had to keep in mind those behind me didn't have my stopping power. I was given a pair of the NRs. Probably ~'78 vintage. Put them on a very close race frame to use as a commuter. In the wet, those things were scary!

There is a cantilever brake that will never make grail, ever. Great stopping brake. In use and in my book, totally grail. The early Shimano OEMs. Nothing fancy at all, just great stoppers that are a joy (esp wit the new pads and wedges) to work on. Worthy of the Peter Mooney they are on.
