I'm looking for a 40 hole Phil Wood front hub for my next project. The bike is a 70's Santana tandem I found on the side of the road for free. No front wheel, though. Rear wheel is a 48 hole Phil with a Super Champion rim.



I just happen to have a 40 hole Super Champion that I can use for the front, and I even have a 40 hole Hadley hub, which I understand is pretty nice, but it'll stick out next to this ratty, old Phil.



If anyone has an old 40 hole Phil and wants to trade for this shiny, newish Hadley that'd be great. Or maybe you'd trade for something else, and that would also be great.

Here's my findings: I have one built FRONT wheel with that hub, but does you no good, plus the rim is a silver Bontrager "Corvair".
HOWever, if you want to make a project I did fine a never-built WTB rim that looks like a very close dark gray color to your Maverick, but it's s different model.
28-hole WTB Speed Master (sticker also says 23 and 11.3) it's got machined brake surface side wall, double wall and eyelet-ed.
As I say it's never built but have to point out there was some shop or shipping damage" a small gouge to one small area on the edge of the rim and part of that braking surface that was touched up with black paint and 'smoothed out', I don't think it affects strength or braking but YMMV, only need to be fully transparent cause the shop was when I bought this years ago, I can take a pic but it's smaller than a dime.

Okay, scratch that! I had assumed that the rear wheel that came on this tandem actually fit; it doesn't. It's a 48 hole Phil, but the O.L.D. is 130 and the frame is 140. I'm not interested in trying to re-space it.

So, now I'm just looking for a 140mm 40 hole rear tandem hub of any make, really. Not going to get too picky with this thing, I'd just like to try to make it whole. I've got a selection of pretty cool hubs to trade, if you're interested.

I don't really believe you mean that. Because if so... Atom drum brake Actually have a pair of tandem wheels, complete with Motobecane axle nuts (I kinda like them) on 27" steel rigida rims.
Well dang, went out and counted to be sure and it's a heavy duty 36. sorry.
If you want to borrow the wheel til you get what you're looking for, pm me.

I meant that if someone had a 40 hole 140mm rear tandem hub, I'd be happy to trade, for instance: a 36 hole 126mm American Classic rear hub, or a pair of Suzue sealed bearing 36 hole 100/126mm hubs, or even this 48 hole 130mm Phil rear hub. Thanks for the loan offer, but shipping wheels just seems prohibitively expensive these days, so I think it's just the hub I'm after.

Oh I get it, you were offering a 36 hole 140mm Atom drum brake hub. Sorry, I misunderstood. That's a cool idea, actually, but I'm holding out for 40 holes.

ISO: Maillard freewheel removal tool: Bicycle Research CT-3 or VAR-405 (will probably only need it for about a minute).

I think I have the BR tool, but not inclined to let it go (I use it about once a decade). Are you sure you need to OWN this or could you just borrow it?

150 pages ago in this thread I'd posted a wanted for one of these. Still haven't found one yet. They guy who was offering them stateside didn't even write back when I had asked about posting one up here. I mean, come on! It would fit in an envelope - easy to do. Oh well.

I suspect @clubman will have something far better - but if he doesn't have something you can use I have a Shimano Exage Mountain (FC-M450) in 175mm that would be available sans chainrings. I also have the bottom bracket for same (English thread/68mm), but both cups and spindle have a fair amount of pitting. Pretty sure the BB would work well enough until you could find something better, though.
