When did Neutrons first appear?

Having an argument with a friend over the most appropriate groupset to pair with 1st Gen neutron wheels.

When were they first released?
What campanolo groupset would have been current at that time?

Before Neutrons there were Nucleons, which look the same but have silver spokes. There may be some other differences but if so they are minor. I think that the Nucleons were inroduced in 1999....I'm not sure when they became Neutrons.

In the first moments after the Big Bang, the universe was extremely hot and dense. As the universe cooled, conditions became just right to give rise to the building blocks of matter – the quarks and electrons of which we are all made. A few millionths of a second later, quarks aggregated to produce protons and neutrons.

Don't blink; you'll miss it!

But bicycle wheel Neutrons, I bet they'll hang around awhile with proper care and occasional truing. If someone here can get theirs to sit still long enough to grab a photo or two, I'd be interested in seeing them :)

Damn! You beat me to the punchline.

Last year for the Neucleon was 2001. First year for the Neutron was 2002. The two differences were in the spokes, "...the use of double butted areodynamic spokes on the rear ,drive side and black finishing for all spokes...".

In 2002 you could choose from Record, Chorus, Centaur, Veloce, Mirage or Xenon groups. The higher three were 10 speed at the time, with the lower gruppos being 9 speed. The Neutron cassette carrier was 9 and 10 speed compatible.

I saw some reviews on-line from as early as 2003, so they were definitely out and had replaced Nucleons by that time. Puts in right in the square taper era. Some of the reviews mentioned some carbon bits on the Ultra model, so I guess you could go alloy or carbon depending on his specific set. Several mentioned the Neutrons had Record level hubs, but maybe they were not the top overall wheelset at the time, so maybe a nice Chorus group?

...Or, did the almighty Creator merely "plant" evidence to lead us to that hypothesis? :innocent: <ducking and running>
